“I think you’re looking at this the wrong way,” my best friend Luke
Bishop said from the back seat as he flipped through a bridal magazine.
Normally, he wouldn’t be riding with us between destinations, but
since this jaunt was only a few hours, his boyfriend Cole was driving his
truck solo, and Luke was gracing us with his presence.
Or, he was gracing me with his presence.
My fiancé—soon to be husband—Kade Denton didn’t look happy in the
least about our plus-one for our trip to Galveston, Texas.
“How should I be looking at it?” I asked Luke in my most neutral voice.
“This is your one chance to be the prettiest one in the room,” Luke
replied. “You’re the bride. Everyone knows that brides are pretty just
because they’re brides. Normally, you have to get in line behind me to take
the crown. This time you win by default. You should embrace the pretty.”
I narrowed my eyes and turned to glare at him. “I am never behind you
in that line,” I barked.
I, Poet Parker, might’ve been gearing up to be a bride this week, but that
didn’t mean I was suddenly going to become demure and cede ground to
my tempestuous best friend. That simply wasn’t going to happen.
Luke snorted as if I’d said the funniest thing in the world. “Oh, Poet.”
He made a tsking sound with his tongue. “You’re so cute.”
I wanted to kill him. Worse, I wanted to sneak into his bedroom and
shave all his hair off when he was sleeping, leaving him with nothing but
his face to distract people. Although, on second thought, he might like that.
“I’m so going to hurt you,” I threatened.
“A bride is supposed to be sweet and pretty, not vicious and violent,”
Luke clucked. “Get with the program, Poet.”
“And you need to start running now.”
Kade, who was used to our bickering, patted my knee. Traffic on I-45
was killer, and he was white-knuckling it across the bridge, though he
would never admit that. Kade was a magical mage with a heart of gold, but
he still had a few hangups from when he thought he was a human.
Apparently, driving over a long bridge—he’d mentioned the “shark-infested
waters” beneath us three times—was one of the hangups.
“Can you guys not fight right now?” Kade begged. “I’m trying to
focus.”
Luke leaned forward and hung between the seats. “Do you want me to
drive? I get it if you’re afraid. It’s a very human emotion. I’m more than
happy to take one for the team if you’re worked up.”
Kade shot Luke a death glare—seriously, it could’ve peeled the skin off
a grape—before remembering he was on the bridge of doom and faced
forward again. “Fasten. Your. Seat belt.” The order came out on a growl.
Luke looked as if he were going to argue, but I shook my head, and he
flopped back. “Why are you so uptight about driving over a bridge?” he
asked.
