Frantor knew he was dreaming, but it made no difference. He
couldn’t stop himself from walking up the hill. Couldn’t stop
himself from looking down on what had once been his hometown. Looking
down at scorched earth and the burnt skeleton of the one tree that had only
caught the edge of the weapons strike. They were all gone—his parents, his
sister, the people he had known his entire life.

In reality, he had walked away. He had walked all the way to the first town
that was still intact and immediately volunteered for the Alliance military.
The Galactic Alliance was one of the two galactic organizations fighting over
Vizal. He held no allegiance to either—but the United Federation forces had
been the ones who destroyed his home. He had been an engineer, but the
Alliance had turned him into a soldier in six weeks, six weeks compressed
into one long blur of grief and exhaustion.

But in his dream, he bypassed his training and his initial battles and went
straight to the inevitable agonizing incident that had turned him into the
monster he was today. He couldn’t escape that either.

He woke with sweat covering his body and a tear slipping down his scarred
cheek, surrounded by the familiar environs of the converted mill he had
turned into his residence. His living area was still dark, but there was a faint
glow coming from the thin gaps in the heavy curtains that covered the
windows. He rose to his feet, ignoring the spike of pain in his shoulder and
the throbbing ache in his lower back and the stiffness of his right knee with
the ease of long practice. As usual, he chose one of the windows that looked
down the valley and away from the main ranch house, then pushed the
curtain aside.

The outside world was completely obscured by a swirling cloud of white. The
snow that had been falling since yesterday had escalated into a major storm.
Based on his experience from their previous winter on this planet, the storm
could last for days, perhaps even weeks. Which meant he would be even
more isolated than normal.

Perhaps that is for the best, he thought as he crossed to his small kitchen area
to prepare his usual simple meal. He found little pleasure in food, but it was a
way to remind himself that he was still a person despite the mechanical parts
that had replaced so much of his body.

As he stirred grain into a pot of boiling water, he found himself envisioning
the cozy kitchen of the ranch house. Artek, his former commander and the
leader of their squad, would be there, no doubt with his second-in-command,
Callum, at his side as always. The difference would be that Nelly, Artek’s
new human bride, would be there as well.
