Planet Calistra
GALINDRA STRODE AWAY FROM the headless corpse at her feet. She
brought her hand to her brow, shielding her eyes from the setting sun’s
glare, and peered across the body-strewn battlefield.
She sighed, a catch in her throat and tears springing to her eyes at the
sight of the many fallen. The acrid tang of blood drifted on the breeze, bitter
in her mouth, almost causing her to gag.
So many young men and women dead before their time. The victory had
been hard won. What a terrible waste! There will be wailing and misery in
the countryside tonight, despite the day’s successful outcome.
The spectacle of such carnage evoked a memory. Glimpses of a remote
mountain fortress robed in flames flashed onto the screen of her mind.
Taken captive by a vicious troll named Slasher, as a young dragon altform, Galindra had faced the dire prospect of being cooked and eaten. Until
a friendly troll, Grolf, went against his superior and enabled her to break
free.
She closed her eyes and recalled the sickening stench of burning flesh
and howls of torment as her dragon father arrived and began to flame the
troll castle.
Galindra pictured Grolf’s broad kindly face and, not for the first time,
wondered if he survived the ensuing dragon-troll war. She hoped he was
still alive and had found peace and happiness.
“Where are you now, Grolf, my friend?” she mused aloud, opening her
eyes. “I owe you my life.”
In the distance, she spotted a pair of figures. One, lustrous, fair hair
flowing down her back, carried a satchel and stooped to a warrior lying on
the gore-flecked soil. Dragon-enhanced eyesight enabled Galindra to
recognize the physician, Aliciara. Then the thickset woman next to her must
be the nurse, Mildreda.
Several strangers approached them. Galindra realized from the
newcomers’ clothing that they were part of the expedition from Earth,
though none carried weapons she could discern.
She watched as the two groups conversed with each other, then they
separated. Galindra surmised that Aliciara and Mildreda were now
receiving help from the offworlders in tending to the wounded of both
sides.
She grimaced and clenched her jaw at an eruption of pain from the hurt
to her shoulder, inflicted by Sergeant Woods during their duel to the death.
She had slain him with an ax taken from an invader from the Void, then let
the heavy weapon fall to the ground beside the Earth soldier’s blooddrenched corpse.
Galindra narrowed her eyes and focused her senses inward, directing a
healing surge of energy to soothe her injury. A grateful sigh escaped her lips
as the ache lessened. She knew she required the attention of a physician, but
felt it could wait until after the more grievously wounded were cared for.
Instead, she decided to seek out the leader of the Earth forces, Colonel
Ducati. She recalled their brief meeting the previous day, when she had
taken him by surprise, portaling in along with her uncle, Arch Mage
Mirchelius, and the offworlder, Captain Naylor.
