“That can’t honestly be the best you can come up with,” I sneered at
my second-in-command from my seat across the large oak desk in my
study. “Did any of you even consider the ramifications if we go after both
packs simultaneously? We may have larger numbers than them, but even we
don’t have the manpower to run that kind of offensive.”

Jasper had been a rogue wolf when he was taken in by my father.
Since the moment he came to the Moonstone Pack he had been my rival, as
well as my best friend. Deprived of any kind of love or affection from my
father, we had been all the other one had. Just as I had been given the role
of alpha, Jasper had been groomed to be my second-in-command.

The constant rivalry between us had been a design of my father’s—a
way for him to push me to be stronger and tougher.
I had always gotten the impression that he believed he was better
suited to the role of alpha than I was. As children, our rivalry pushed us to
be stronger and tougher, but now that were adults, my father’s plan had
backfired. Instead of a strong leader with a loyal subject, our pack was led
by an alpha who always needed to guard himself against the one person he
should be able to trust.

Jasper had been like a brother to me. Until he wasn’t.
It was a pity I hadn’t found a way to remove him from the equation.
Jasper had always been careful not to push too far or break any pack rules,
but no matter how ruthless I was, it seemed that Jasper always wanted to go
further.

“Alpha, the plan is a good one,” he said diplomatically. “Your
council has put a lot of thought and planning into it, and we are asking for
your permission to move forward.”

I knew that the slightest inkling of weakness would spell disaster for
my rule as alpha. So far, I had been lucky that the pack did not want a
change in leadership, but luck could only hold so long. Conversations like
this one proved that my position was a tenuous one. Something would need
to be done—and soon.

Jasper spoke of asking for permission, but a large part of me was
aware that he wouldn’t keep asking for my consent. It was only a matter of
time before he might start to ask for forgiveness instead. An escalation
against Jasper might be necessary to ensure that my place as alpha remained
intact. And to protect the pack from his power-hungry schemes.
