The crisp, chilly air was redolent with the aroma of maple syrup and
sizzling bacon. Laughter and excited, enthusiastic conversation filled the
large greenspace in the center of town as Spenser walked around the annual
pancake breakfast being put on by Taft High’s athletic department. The
pancake breakfast is a fundraiser, of course, but doubles as a pep rally with
all the school’s athletes from their different sports teams combining to
pump up the crowd.
Spenser had positioned herself on the stage that sat at the far end of the
greenspace to give herself an unobstructed view of the entire place. She
didn’t expect there to be any trouble, but she’d deployed her deputies to
keep an eye on things anyway. People mocked her for being paranoid, but
Spenser had always believed in an ounce of prevention.
“What do you think, Sheriff?”
Slightly startled, Spenser turned to see Regina Peck, the wife of City
Councilman Brian Peck, standing beside her. She’d approached so quietly,
that Spenser hadn’t even noticed. Of Chinese heritage, Regina was a slight
woman, no more than five-three with black hair and almond-shaped eyes
that matched, and an olive-colored complexion. She had a thin, waif-like
figure, a warm, engaging smile, and a very gracious way about her.
Spenser hadn’t had much of an opportunity to interact with her, but on
the few occasions when their paths crossed, she’d always had a favorable
impression of the woman. Spenser liked her. She’d struck Spenser as
intelligent, clever, and very quick-witted, although she got the idea Regina
kept what she thought was a wicked and sarcastic sense of humor muted
for, perhaps, the sake of her husband’s political career.
“I think as long as I don’t have to listen to the tennis team singing
country songs again, I’ll enjoy it a lot more,” Spenser replied with a laugh.
“Yeah,” she said with a comical grimace. “It just goes to show that
they’re athletes and not musicians for a reason.”
They shared a laugh as Spenser looked out across the gathering in the
green space. There were multiple tents set up with volunteers cooking up
the pancakes, waffles, bacon, and sausage. There were still people lined up,
getting their food, but the tables were filled with adults and students
chatting and laughing together, everybody seeming to be having a good
time. The vibe around the greenspace was good. Fun. Wholesome. It was
nice to see, and even though she was working, Spenser was having a good
time.
“What do you think of our humble little town, Sheriff?” Regina asked.
“I’ve come to love it,” Spenser replied. “It’s beautiful and peaceful… for
the most part. The pace of life is slower here and that’s taken some getting
used to. But really, what’s not to love?”
“That’s what I think. I honestly can’t imagine living anywhere else,”
Regina said. “But do you ever miss it? All the action and excitement of
being an FBI agent? Or the hustle and bustle of living in New York?”
