“You’re overreacting as always,” I said to my father and sighed.
“How is it overreacting when there is a hurricane coming your
way?” he practically yelled into the phone.
“The news exaggerates things all the time. It isn’t going to be that
bad. It more than likely will just go right past me. There’s no need to freak
out.”
“You should have gotten out while you had the chance. If you leave
now, you still can.”
“There are no flights out. I don’t want to be stuck on the mainland
trying to find a hotel with all the other tourists who didn’t leave. I certainly
don’t want to take up any shelter from other people who might need it,” I
said.
“This is not the time for you to be compassionate to others.”
“It’s always the time to be compassionate towards others. Plus, why
would I leave when I can stay here and be just as happy and safe?”
“You would be safer if you were home.”

thought it would be easier to tell him that I was going to stay than to have
him worry and keep calling. I thought he would be reasonable and
understand that the best place to be was where I was.
“You built the house to withstand a hurricane, even a tsunami. Truly,
Dad, I’ll be fine here. Once the storm has passed and the turtles are all
gone. I will come home. It will be fine.”
“Don’t try to butter me up and make me feel better. Yes, the house
can withstand some of mother nature, but not all of it. Plus, you will more
than likely be without any electricity for days, if not weeks. No one will be
able to get to you if you were hurt. There might not be any way to
communicate with you.”
“I have the Sat phone if I need it. We have generators here that
should last for weeks or if I need to for months. You built this place to be
safe, you need to trust what you did, and that I know what I’m doing. Can
you do that? Can you trust me?”
“Bailey, it isn’t that I don’t trust you or think that you’re a strong,
amazing, intelligent, capable woman. I just don’t think you or anyone is a
