Xira ran up the mighty granite steps, taking them two at a time despite
their size. Archers and slingers and spear-wielding soldiers rushed to
and fro on their own missions, but all moved aside for her without
voicing complaint. At least, they wouldn’t say anything within earshot.
Once atop the wall, her pace quickened, heedless of near-collisions with
troops who dodged out of her way or threw themselves against the
battlements, which faced the enemy on both sides—a fact which likely
saved several from falling to their deaths a hundred feet below.
A silver gleam in the sky flashed in the corner of her eye as a six-foot
spear streaked toward her. She leaned back, almost losing her balance, as
the spear passed a foot from her face. Half its length passed through an
archer who’d exposed his back between stone blocks, and two small spikes
protruding from the spearhead’s base enabled it to whip him neck-first
across her path before embedding in a stone battlement. The stuck spear
pinned the soldier face-first, but he was beyond even twitching.
No human could have thrown that spear up here, much less with such
force. Worse, the enemy outnumbered her defenders by at least six-to-one,
looking like a sea of metal rippling in the field beneath the lavender
morning sun.
Worst of all, half a dozen of her god’s best had died at the hands of
Hephaestus’ champions. Soldiers could be replaced, but it would take years
for Ares to find new champions the equal of those he’d lost this day.
Xira ducked under the still-quivering haft without slowing. She could
think of only one solution to this problem, one chance to survive the day,
much less the battle, and this was her purpose in sprinting atop the massive
curtain wall that marked the Empire of Fire’s southern border.
Ares had built it a thousand years ago on a whim, to keep his rivals at
bay, and no foe had ever so much as breached that wall, which was why her
god-emperor’s false sense of security had lulled him into letting it fall into
disrepair. Unless she could make him listen, and convince him to let her off
her metaphorical leash, it could well be his undoing.
Ares also had no patience for failure, and if she couldn’t sway him—
and they lost this critical battle as a result—his wrath, not the enemy’s,
would likely be the end of her. He may not have cared about his mortal
subjects’ blood the enemy was spilling, but he’d damn well care about his
own skin. She just had to make him see he was in danger of losing it.
Thankfully, Ares could be reasoned with in military matters, if he found her
idea sound, unlike many of the other gods. It helped that Ares had never
been especially good at being cautious, prone to brazen acts of glory.
