Detective Constable Morgan Brookes was parked in a plain white divisional
car, no markings on it whatsoever to alert the public it was being used as an
official police vehicle. She was in the small car park opposite Fell Street,
where she suspected she’d seen escaped serial rapist and killer Gary Marks,
who also happened to be her biological father.
Not that she had any feelings
for the man except perhaps contempt. He’d killed her mother in cold blood
when she was a little girl, and more recently, he had been on the run from
HMP Manchester for seven months, with no clue as to his whereabouts until
last week, when she thought she’d spotted his familiar figure disappearing
around a street corner.
She still wasn’t a hundred per cent sure if she had
actually seen him or whether it was wishful thinking, but she wasn’t taking
any chances. She had been monitoring the location ever since whenever she
had some downtime. If Morgan saw Gary, then, obviously, she would alert
her sergeant, Ben, and inspector, Tom, but until she was sure she was doing
this alone. And if she got the chance to bring him in, well, she would. There
were only a few people around today, which made it easier to be a little more
discreet.
Logically, Morgan didn’t see how Gary Marks would have the
audacity to come back to Rydal Falls, where he had terrorised the small
community in 1999, and manage to live here unnoticed. People noticed, and
they gossiped. The place wasn’t so big that he could move around without
anyone spotting him.
Then again, how many people who lived here now had
been here back when he was preying on women by the side of the river?
Lifting the latte she’d bought from the little coffee shop around the
corner, she took a sip as her radio crackled to life, making her hand wobble
and her coffee dribble down her chin.
‘Any available patrols for Forest Pines Campsite or anyone near to the
area?’
Morgan listened for a reply, but it was silent, like tumbleweeds rolling
through the radio waves. It made her fingers itch to press the button and
answer them. She could offer to go, but Amy, her friend and colleague,
would berate her when she saw her because they were detectives and not
response officers. If no one offered next time they asked, she would go. It
wasn’t in her nature to shirk away from any jobs that came in, no matter how
big or small. She turned the rotary dial on the handset so she could hear the
conversation, and the car was filled with the sound of Cain’s deep voice, her
favourite police officer who gave the best hugs.
‘Sorry, I was with a member of the public – is that a job, control?’
Morgan smiled. He was always the one to answer any jobs that were
passed. She would have enjoyed working on shift with Cain if she hadn’t
ended up thrown in at the deep end on her first day of independent patrol and
working alongside Ben and the rest of the team in CID.
