“Oh fuck, that hurts,” Savryn hisses, his head dropping back and his
eyes squeezing hard enough to force tears from the corners.
“Sometimes, I think you take pleasure in making me suffer.”
With my tongue wedged between my teeth, I dig my thin silver needle
into the firm meat of his pectoral, perhaps with a smidge more force than
necessary.

“My sweet Sav, I have no idea what you mean,” I coo, gracing him with
a faux-innocent smile before I pull out the instrument and dig it in again,
twisting just a little.

“Ves.”
He grunts out my name as his hands tighten around my hips, where I’m
straddling him in my custom-designed tattoo chair. Upholstered in supple
black leather, it’s just barely long enough to accommodate Savryn’s sixfoot-four frame. A lever allows me to adjust it to the correct angle, and it is
currently cocked at thirty degrees as I work on a section of his chest.
“Fuuuuuck,” Savryn groans again, and I roll my eyes because, really,
he’s just a big baby.

I tuck back a lock of my dark hair and exhale a wicked laugh as I wipe
away a drop of blood beading on the surface of his smooth, tanned skin.
Savryn is so very pretty to look at. All golden muscle and dark blond
hair just begging your fingers to run through it.

The man also doesn’t have two brain cells to rub together. But that’s
okay. He’s my favorite type of lover. Not all that bright, but definitely sexy.
I don’t need anyone suffering from delusions of controlling me or telling
me what to do. The ‘smart’ ones think every dull thought conjured from the
recesses of their pea-sized brains is worth listening to, and that usually
couldn’t be further from the truth.

“Stop complaining,” I say. “You wanted this one to be strong, so it
needs more magic.”
A pained grunt is his answer as his eyes squeeze shut again, his
forehead creasing with tension.
I select a different needle from my small side table and dip it into a vial
of ink spelled for strength. Savryn is a hunter, providing a steady supply of
meat for the local butcher, but the forests around here are dangerous for
mortal men.

Within its leafy shadows, one can expect to find the typical bears and
wildcats to contend with, but also far more sinister things. Demons that
roam the darkness of the woods, supposedly guarding the barrier to the
Shadow Realm. I’m not sure how true that last part is, but it certainly makes
for a good story told around the fire at night.
Regardless, they’re incredibly vicious and can easily overpower any
human.

After the last time I ran from my life, I settled here to set up my shop,
figuring the presence of monsters would draw fewer eyes my way. When
you’re constantly distracted by a distant threat, it’s easy to overlook the one
living in your midst.

Savryn isn’t afraid of me, though. He knows what I am and comes to me
for protection with my special—but entirely secret from everyone else—
gifts.
