Sixteen years later
~Calista~
My father’s voice spoke in my ear through the earpiece I wore, quiet but
as authoritative as always. “He’s coming your way, Calista. Everyone else,
keep your position. I’m going silent now so I won’t give your position
away. You’ve got this.”

I sure as hell hoped so as my grip tightened on the rifle in my hands,
loaded with silver bullets. Some creatures, I could hunt without a second
thought, comfortable in their familiarity and predictability, but others still
sent a spike of adrenaline and fear through me, making my heart pound and
my palms sweat despite the cool night air surrounding me.

Wendigos fell into the second category. In the five years I’d been hunting
full-time, ever since I turned sixteen, we’d only encountered one before and
that encounter didn’t go well. In that case, we were called up to Alberta to
deal with a wendigo who killed two hikers in one of the national parks
there. Officially, their deaths were recorded as bear attacks, but we knew
better. Wendigos were tall, humanoid creatures who fed on humans. Their
claws might make an attack look like a bear hunt, but bears didn’t suck all
the marrow out of the bones like a wendigo would.

Some hunters thought all wendigos were ancient, existing for thousands
of years and hibernating until their hunger became too great, at which point
they awoke to kill and feed again before returning to their slumber. Others
believed humans could be turned to wendigos through the ritualistic eating
of human flesh. Either way, everyone knew that wendigos couldn’t be
reasoned with. They had no soul or conscience left, meaning death was the
only option for dealing with them.
However, just because we couldn’t talk to them didn’t mean they weren’t
smart.

Realizing we were hunting it, the wendigo three years earlier turned to
tricks and traps, managing to kill two of our men before it found me. Using
its power of mimicry, it called out to me with my mother’s voice, begging
for help. In my inexperience and the sheer panic of thinking someone I
loved was in danger, I fell for it, abandoning my post as I ran to help her,
and fell right into its trap, quite literally, when the ground gave way beneath
me.

Stuck in the hole it had dug, I only got a glimpse of the creature’s skeletal
appearance, its paper-thin skin pulled tight across its face, its bones
straining against their covering as if they might poke through at any second.
Black, hollow-looking eyes stared down at me while the creature licked its
thin, white lips. Shivering in terror, I prepared to fight, knowing I probably
wouldn’t succeed.

I survived only because my father also deviated from his plan, coming to
my rescue. They struggled above me while I could do nothing but listen to
the horrible howls and shrieks of the creature and my father’s anguished
cries.
