CADEN
Dead men don’t knock on doors.
Do they?
Apparently, in this case, they do.
The thought echoes through my mind as I stare into the eyes of our
supposedly deceased father. His ice-cold gaze pierces through us like ice,
making the blood in my veins turn to frost. Cathal stands at the door, his
body tensed like a coiled spring, while Ciarán hovers behind him, anger
simmering beneath the surface. As for me, I’m slumped on the couch,
nursing a fresh wound on my side, but the shock of seeing him alive has
numbed any pain.

A sense of foreboding hangs in the air, mingling with the remnants of
lust from our time with Summer earlier.
Despite the ordinary surroundings, there’s no denying the impending
chaos that threatens to rip apart everything we’ve built since he left.
“Long time no see, boys,” our father says, his voice dripping with
malice, which fires me into motion, and I shoot to my feet, not even feeling
the slice of pain in my side. My hand tightens on the gun Ciarán handed me,
less than a minute ago.

My mind races, struggling to make sense of the ghost standing before
us. Cathal’s hand tightens on the doorframe, his knuckles turning white as
his eyes narrow with fury. Ciarán, ever the protector, raises his gun higher,
the barrel aimed straight at our father’s chest.
“What the fuck?” Cathal spits out, his voice laced with venom.
Keeping my tone low and dangerous, I say, “You can fuck off back to
wherever you dragged your sorry ass out from.”
“Is this some kind of sick joke?” Ciarán growls, his finger twitching on
the trigger.

Fear for Summer gnawing at me, I glance toward the hallway. My
brothers are worried too. With a grimace, I move to block the hallway
leading to where she sleeps, unaware of the nightmare unfolding.
Our father sneers, his eyes darting between the three of us. “So
defensive. Relax, boys. I’m just here for a visit.”
“Like hell you are,” Ciarán snaps.

“Get out,” I demand, my voice shaking with the effort to control my
anger. “Now.”
“Or what?” our father taunts, taking a step closer. The air between us
crackles with tension, and it takes everything I have not to lash out. Seeing
him again so suddenly, without warning, has dredged up everything I was
trying to forget. Everything I thought was dead and buried is no longer.
“Or you won’t leave this apartment alive,” Cathal threatens, his voice
barely a whisper, but carrying the weight of a thousand promises.

“Try me,” our father dares, his twisted smile making my skin crawl.
We stand there, a whirlwind of emotions churning inside each of us, our
minds reeling from the shock. The room feels as if it’s closing in on us,
suffocating us with memories long buried. We’ve fought to escape the
darkness of our past, and now it stands before us, unapologetic and
menacing.
