I cut the engine of the rental car I picked up at the airport and look at
Hiker’s Haven, the local diner I spotted on the way to the Airbnb I booked.
It sounds like the perfect spot to grab something to eat before hitting the
sack.
I know running away is never the solution, but it sure as hell feels great
to do so. I need to get away from the shitshow my life has turned into, even
though I only have a couple of days to spare. I just figured two days is
better than nothing. Always look on the bright side or whatever cheesy
quote they often put on mugs and shirts.
I’m hoping that a small town in the mountains is the one place on earth
where people won’t recognize me. I need to clear my head and find a way
to return to the spotlight without coming across as a frazzled mess. My
hometown isn’t the place to do it. Everyone would recognize me in a
heartbeat and wouldn’t leave me alone.
The fact that I grew up in a mountain town like this one, Bearclaw
Ridge, helps me to relax. They’re all the same, after all. I’m pretty
confident there won’t be any paparazzi hiding behind the trees or following
me on a remote hiking trail. I snort at the thought. They’d probably be out
of breath after only half a mile. The streets of L.A. aren’t exactly the same
as Montana’s mountain ranges. I’d out-hike them in a matter of minutes.
Once a mountain man, always a mountain man. I grin. Now there’s a quote
to put on a shirt.
I slam my car door shut and lower my cap so that it covers part of my
eyes. The diner looks almost deserted, which isn’t a surprise. It’s a
Thursday, and it’s near closing time. Most people are at home by now,
snuggling in front of the television or fast asleep. The perfect moment for
me to head inside.
I pick out the booth at the far wall and slide into the seat. I grab the menu
wedged between the condiments and peruse the available options when a
beautiful voice interrupts me.
“Hockey fan?”
I look up. The waitress stands next to my booth, pen and pad in hand and
a smile on her face.
“Excuse me?”
She points to my cap. “Number seventeen. Frosty Fury Falcons. Flynn
McAllister, right?”
I grin. A woman who knows hockey. I love that. “That’s right. I’m a big
fan. How about you?”
“I’m more of a Jax Whalen fan myself,” she says with a wink.
I arch an eyebrow. “You do realize Jax hasn’t been on the ice since his
accident, right?”
“Of course, I’m not some sports noob.” Despite her rolling her eyes at
me, she’s smiling.
“Really?” I sit back in my seat. “Are you just saying that to impress me,
or are you an actual dedicated sports fan?” I tease.
