IF
See, this is exactly what I’m talking about…” I say, my free hand
outstretched to the television. On the screen Jennifer Aniston and
Vince Vaughn argue and edge the line toward their inevitable
breakup. “It’s not about the damn ballet.” I echo her frustrations, my
attention fixed on the screen as I shake my head.
It’s about communication and human decency.
I take a large gulp of my Riesling.

At the other end of the couch, my best friend Serena mumbles
something indecipherable, but her focus isn’t on me. She met someone new.
Well, a few someones. She’s flirty and eternally feminine. Even on dating
apps, her personality is magnetic. So, of course, guys always line up to be
with her. For her, they fall all over themselves to be in a long-term
relationship. Little do they know, she’s more of a catch-and-release kind of
woman. Dating is sport to her. She knows too well that it’s all rainbows,
butterflies, and sex cutes until someone gets hurt.
Me.

I’m talking about me.
I’m the one who gets all dreamy and enamored, imagining a future after
he lets me keep a single change of clothes at his place. I cook four-course
meals and drop everything for a few hours with him. I fall head-over-heels
in love with his house, his family, his stupid dreams.
With him.
“Not for nothing, but—” Serena starts, but I tune out as the argument on
the television plays out in front of my eyes—the loud, passionate gravity of
the characters voices. It feels urgent that I verbalize what I’m feeling. Now.
“This movie…” I cut her off. My mind races a mile a minute with a
toxic mix of frustration and sadness flaring in my gut. “Why doesn’t he
understand that it’s not about the dishes or the freaking flowers? Or the
sweet dog who gets stuck in the middle of it…”

“Uhh, last I checked, there’s no dog in this movie,” Serena quips
absently. Over the past three weeks, she’s listened to me spiral over movies,
food, random songs on the radio.

Really, anything sets me off.
I toss a glance over my shoulder. Her long legs are tucked up to her
chest. Her chin rests on them as she stares at her phone. A hint of a sarcasm
curves her full lips like she’s reading much deeper into my words.
“You get what I mean, Serena. It’s like she’s the only one in the
relationship.” All the steam dissipates, and I throw my hands up. “He just
doesn’t get it.”
“Yeah, valid point. But, also, these are fictional characters.”
“Have you ever heard of art imitating life?”
