FIVE HUNDRED KOINLINGS
Metal branches, which wrap around the hilt of my blade, come alive
and grip my victim, pulling them towards the tip of death.
The white in Kaden’s eyes amplify, begging me for mercy. I
force my hand back, and the vines release him and find their place once
again amongst the rest of the silver in my hilt.
During our breaks from traveling to Emery, we practice with the new
weapons King Edward gifted us after helping remove Amilika from Noel.
He presented me with a sword called The Giver. At the hilt is a tree and
metal branches that twist up and onto the blade. When near my target, the
branches act as arms and pull the target closer to the sword.
If I can boast, I’ve gotten good with the blade. The mix consumed in the
metal is a definite advantage, and maybe my ability to move items with my
mind helps, but I think I can put up a decent fight without their aid.
“Well done,” a breathless Kaden says. “Better and better every time.”
His hand sweeps back black hair that has found its way to the front of
his face, covering those sharp golden eyes of his. With the same hand, he
then wipes away beads of sweat that collect on his forehead.
Even with the proximity of how close my blade had been to his chest,
he holds a grin that he can’t rid himself of. He looks at me the same way my
mother did when I was a child, learning something new for the first time.
She had the same smile when I played an entire piece on the piano without
mistakes, when I first baked a batch of cookies that didn’t burn, even when
she sent me off to the ball.
The Zyranian Ball feels like ages ago. The events are ones I can’t forget,
no matter how hard I try. That torturous thunder still pounds in my ears at
night, and I can’t even think about all the people in Zyra we had to leave
behind—people like our own parents.
That night should be one we still gush over. A day where we got to
dance in a castle and be amongst royalty. No one thought Prince Lorian, the
man I bear the burden of sharing blood with and now call Father, would
destroy it all.
Moving away from Kaden, I place my sword back in my scabbard. Each
step back comes with a squishing noise and my boots temporarily get stuck
in the mud for a second or two.
The scent of fresh rain still clings to the morning air, but the gray in the
sky is disappearing, opening up to a bright blue. It’s a good sign for all of
us. We have been traveling Green-Eyed Forest for over a week. Half of
those days have brought rain with them, but the need to keep moving means
enduring the rain and mud.
I can hear grunts behind me coming from an agitated Jewels. Frustrated
by the shots Krispin blocks, she releases another arrow, but it zooms past
him and continues on, disappearing out of sight, like it possesses a mind of
its own.
