A marvel.
Even to my weary eyes that had seen it all countless times over
the last century, I couldn’t ignore the shiver that crept up my spine
every time I entered Evermore’s great fortress. The grand structure loomed
over the sprawling city below the high crags, its dark stone walls adorned
with intricate carvings of battles won and lost, legends of old, and the
creatures of the night who had come before us
My family home was nowhere near the grandeur of these stone
corridors, and I’d been fortunate to have been chosen for the position I did
hold. My mother was unwilling to tell me just how she’d been able to secure
it for me—and I didn’t want to ask.
My mother’s ambitions had been poured into my ears for as long as I
could remember, and she saw my position as a lady in waiting as a means to
an end.
A stepping stone.
A soft breeze brushed past me, carrying with it the scent of the dark
roses and nightshade that grew outside the walls of the fortress. It was a
heady combination that never failed to remind me of my place within these
walls.
The chandeliers above cast flickering shadows on the floor and their
candles cast an eerie glow over the gathering darkness outside. I shivered
slightly, wrapping my arms around myself to ward off the chill that clung to
the air like a lover’s embrace.
We were preparing for a grand event, one that would shape the future of
our kingdom. A high-profile betrothal announcement between two powerful
families was to take place that night, and I had been tasked with ensuring
everything was perfect. The decorations needed to be exquisite, a reflection
of the union we were about to celebrate.
I busied myself with arranging blood-red roses in ornate vases. Their
velvety petals caressed my fingers as I worked and I tried to focus my
thoughts on my efforts and forget my mother’s incessant scheming.
Dark silk banners emblazoned with the crests of the two families that
would be united by this betrothal hung proudly from the rafters, their edges
trimmed with delicate silver embroidery.
Long tables had been draped in fine white linen, the settings immaculate
and precise, each gleaming silver fork and knife aligned with military
precision. Crystal goblets awaited the finest blood-tinged wine to be
poured, their delicate facets caught the candlelight and cast it around the
room like liquid jewels.
As I worked, I couldn’t help but imagine myself as the bride-to-be,
standing before the gathered crowd in a gown of silk and lace, a tiara
glinting in my dark hair. The thought sent a thrill down my spine, a
momentary escape from the reality of my station. But deep down, I knew
that such dreams were best forgotten.
I was not alone in the banquet hall, and the noise of conversation from
the other ladies filled the air and helped to put me more at ease as I listened
to their conversations instead of the flurry of thoughts that tumbled in my
mind.
