Aurelia
The garden was quiet.
The guards who usually prowled the castle grounds in the depths
of the night had moved on in their rounds. We were careful.
We had to be.
I knew the guards’ movements from memory.
“Raelinn,” I whispered into the shadows, praying she would appear like
a ghost in the night.
The sound of her name tasted like sin on my lips, but it was a sin I
willingly indulged in.
The hidden garden was our sanctuary, tucked away behind the towering
walls of the Evermore Coven’s stronghold. It was a small space, no larger
than a modest room, yet it felt infinite in its beauty. The delicate scent of
jasmine and night-blooming flowers filled my nostrils as I stepped into the
moonlit haven. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves overhead, casting dappled
shadows on the moss-covered stones beneath my feet.
Footsteps echoed in the stone corridor, and my heart pounded in my
chest. I tensed, ready to flee if necessary, but as the figure emerged from the
darkness, relief washed over me.
It was her–as though I had conjured her with my longing.
Raelinn’s pale red hair cascaded down her back like a bloodstained
waterfall and I longed to run my fingers through it and pull her mouth
against mine.
As she came closer I noticed that her piercing gray eyes were filled with
concern.
“Are you alright?” she asked, her voice barely audible. Our eyes locked,
and I could see the worry etched on her beautiful face.
I nodded, unable to speak as the adrenaline coursed through my veins.
The danger of our meetings was nothing compared to the intensity of my
feelings for her. In her presence, I felt alive, more so than I had ever been.
The risk was worth it, even if being discovered would mean our doom.
“Raelinn, we can’t keep doing this,” I whispered, my words betraying
the desire that burned within me.
“You say that every time,” she murmured.
“We’ll be caught. They’ll kill us both.”
“Let them try,” she hissed, her eyes blazing with defiance. “I’d rather die
a thousand deaths than live an eternity without you.”
Her words stirred something deep within me, and I pulled her into a
desperate embrace. Our bodies collided, the force of our passion slamming
us against the rough bark of the tree behind me. Lips met with frenzied
urgency, teeth clashing as we fought for dominance. Her hands tangled in
my hair, pulling me closer, and I surrendered to the intoxicating warmth of
her embrace.
As Raelinn’s touch ignited a fire within me, I knew it was only a matter
of time before our secret would be discovered. The darkness that
surrounded us could not hide our love forever, but for now, it was all we
had.
“Did anyone see you?” Raelinn whispered against my lips, her voice
barely audible above the wind’s sighing.
“Of course not,” I murmured, my heart pounding with the thrill of our
clandestine rendezvous. “You know I’m more careful than that.”
“Good.” Her eyes, twin pools of gray steel, held a hunger that sent a
shiver down my spine.
