Holy Matrimony
Bella – Turin, Italy
I hated my father for making me stay. He said it was important that our two
families meet and that I choose between two brothers I’d never met.
Combining the two families would create an unbreakable chain between
Turin and New York. Unfortunately, he deemed me the link between the
cities, a link I wanted no part of.
I walked from the pool to the base of the mountains, mesmerized by the
snow covering the Gran Paradiso Mountain peak in the distance. As a little
girl, along with my four brothers, we ventured into the mountains every
summer on vacation. The Robustelli name gave us the best
accommodations and services a crime syndicate family could buy. It also
gave us stares and glares from people who wanted to see our family fail.
Everyone in Italy knew the Robustelli name represented money and
power. They also knew disrespecting the name could get you killed. That’s
why the Agossas from New York were in town.
Mother put her hands on my shoulders, but I didn’t dare turn and let her
see the tears. I never allowed anyone to see my tears since Father said tears
showed weakness and the Robustellis were not weak. Like every other
emotion I experienced, I let the sadness sink inside me.
“Your father means well,” she said. “He only wants what’s best for you.
We all do.” She brushed my hair aside. It reminded me of when, as a little
girl, we sat in front of the mirror, and she brushed my hair. She would tell
me that one day, a young prince would come into my life and make me his
princess. Instead, I’d grown up with a father who wanted to pimp me out to
better his position in Italy. That’s not what little girls dreamed about.
“There’s great responsibility that comes with being a Robustelli.”
“He doesn’t, Mother. He wants what’s best for the Robustelli name.” I
watched the mountains, wishing it were summer and I was ten. “Just
because your parents forced you to marry him doesn’t make forcing me to
marry someone I’ve never met right. I’m twenty years old. Marriage would
make me forty in the first year.”
“We’re only asking you to give it a chance, Bella.” She stepped to the
side and moved in front of me, wiping my tears but not changing her mind.
“Give it a chance. I’ll ask your father if we can slow it down. I’ll tell him
you need more time to make your decision.”
“You know I will have to move to America, away from you. Do you want
that?” She wouldn’t answer because she never went against Father’s
wishes. He didn’t care what she thought only that she properly represented
the Robustelli name. Her father died before I was born. I suspect joining the
Robustelli name got him killed.
“I will come to visit,” Mother said and stepped back. When I was little,
she said everything in America moved too fast and never wanted to live that
way. She raised my arms and sighed, unhappy with my choice of clothes.
