Serenity Jones
Main Street
Dentonville, Pennsylvania
One Week before Event
From the corner of her eye, Serenity Jones noticed two male silhouettes
advancing parallel to her on the other side of Main Street. An icy shiver ran
down her spine as she clenched the straps of her backpack and picked up
her pace. Instead of risking a direct glance at the men, she flicked her eyes
toward the reflective surface of a storefront window she was passing. It
gave her the opportunity to scrutinize the figures trailing her, under the
pretense of casual window shopping.

As soon as she saw their faces, she recognized her pursuers. It was
them. It was the two men from the corner where she’d spent the afternoon
panhandling. They’d argued with her over the spot she’d claimed as her
own for the last two years, ever since she had first come to live on the
streets at the age of fourteen.

A knot of dread twisted in her stomach. Had they followed her? They
were like predators on the prowl, mirroring her steps across the street.
One of them glanced in her direction before pointing toward an
alleyway on her side of the street. Then, like they were in sync, they both
walked toward her, their intent apparent in their intimidating strides.

Were
they plotting to corner her in that deserted alley?
As soon as the men vanished around the building’s corner, Serenity
seized her chance. She darted across the street and slipped into the
comforting refuge of Harrington’s Bistro. Shrugging off her backpack, she
let it thud onto a booth seat by the window and slid in after it. In a swift
motion, she picked up a menu from the table rack and used it as a veil to
blend into the restaurant’s ambiance while keeping her eyes peeled on the
street outside.

Instinctively, she reached into her pocket, expecting to feel the
ironwood handle of her pocketknife, and then remembered it was still
tucked securely beneath her sleeping pad back at her tent. An
uncomfortable vulnerability gnawed at her as she registered its absence. She
had left the knife behind that morning, knowing that carrying weapons was
strictly forbidden at the youth shelter she frequented for an occasional,
much-needed shower and to get clean clothes.

The knife had been a gift from her father, a relic from a time when
safety wasn’t a daily struggle. It had been her constant companion since
she’d been living on the streets, and now, more than ever, she felt
vulnerable and exposed without it.

Serenity chanced a peek over the top of the menu, her gaze trained on
the alley from where she expected the pair to emerge. And emerge they did.
The taller figure cast wary glances into the store windows as if hunting for
her, while the shorter one ripped open the door of the neighboring hair
salon.

Every nerve in Serenity’s body was on high alert. As usual, she was
already strategizing and plotting her next two moves to maneuver out of
this dangerous predicament. They were looking for her. That was obvious.
It was a deadly game of hide and seek, and they’d aimed to make her their
prey—their mistake!
