I run through our small cottage with Mama right on my heels. Both
of us are giggling as we reenact the familiar, nightly scene.
“Why must we do this every night?” She laughs.
“I don’t want to go to bed!” The voice that leaves my lips is a mixture of
rebellion and fun.
“It’s bedtime. You have to get your sleep. You know how grumpy you get
when you don’t get enough sleep.” She continues chasing me, holding my
favorite book in one hand and my blanket in the other. “I’m gonna get
you!”
I stop running, facing the small corner kitchen. Staring at the hand
towel hanging on the front of the oven, I blink my eyes fast. I don’t know
why, but sometimes things catch on fire when I do. A small puff of smoke
leaves the towel, and I laugh at my success. “Now I don’t have to go to
bed.” I take off running into the living room, admiring the smoke I created.
“Keegan, no. Don’t do that, sweetheart.” She quickly moves to the
towel, throwing it in the sink. “We’ve talked about that. It’s dangerous.
” She
turns back toward me with her hands on her hips. “It’s bedtime, my love.
It’s late, and I have some reading I need to do before I go to bed. Go get
your pajamas on. I’ll be there in a minute to tuck you in.”
“Yes, ma’am.” I turn, heading toward my room. I take one last look at a
second towel hanging on the stove and picture the smoke from earlier. This
time, instead of smoke, flames shoot out of the towel. Not just ordinary
flames. The kind that reaches across the room. In an instant, the towel is
fully engulfed and my mother rushes for the bucket she keeps under the sink
for just this occasion.
“Mama?” Something tells me this is different. The fire continues to
grow, and she continues to fill buckets, trying to extinguish the flames.
Within seconds the flames have taken over the entire stove and moved to the
countertop beside it. What have I done?
“Keegan! Get out now!” my mother screams as she throws another
bucket of water on the raging fire.
“Mama!” I slide my back down the wall, covering my ears with my
hands. In front of me, the fire continues to grow. Multiple buckets of water
aren’t doing anything to fight the demon of flames dancing in front of me.
“Go, Keegan. Mama will be right there. I promise!”
Tears flow down my cheeks as I follow directions, leaving her alone in
the cottage. I turn back just as the fire fully engulfs the room she’s in.
“Mama!”
She turns, facing me. “I love you, Keegan!” she shouts as the roof
collapses above her.
“What are you doing here?” I open my eyes to see a boy, not much older
than me, standing in the doorframe of the rotted-out storage building I’ve
been living in for the past week. He steps inside, stomping the snow from
his boots. “Are you stupid or something?” I don’t speak, just stare blankly
at the kid belonging to the family I followed home days earlier.
