“Come here, child.”
She couldn’t stop her feet from moving towards him. Why could
she not control her body? Why was she moving straight into his arms and
letting him hold her? His hand rested on the base of her back, holding her
like they were in some kind of dance, but there was no dancing. Only the
hollow feeling inside her chest and the screaming inside of her head that
refused to come out of her mouth, and then pain. Pain that shot into her
stomach and radiated through her body like a flame, turning her insides
into ash and ripping her world apart. She wanted to let go of him, she
wanted to fight, to scratch at his eyes instead of lying with the dirt on the
ground, bleeding and helpless.

“Now, where would be the fun in that?”
“We are here.”
Ana jumped awake as she sat upright in her seat. She blinked away the

see through it. It would settle around her skin and make the hairs on the
back of her neck stand at attention while the room would shake the
paintings from the walls and topple over tables.

Any time Ezra tried to
teach her how to pull her magic’s reach back in, she would lose all control
and send him flying across the room or set the carpet on fire. The magic
was untrained and raw, Genevieve had explained. Dangerous. Like a child
with a loaded shotgun. She was so unsafe for everyone around her that
Genevieve had to bind her magic by
