Getting a dog to bark when you couldn’t use your voice to tell him what to do
was hard.
I’ve been sitting out on the steps in front of the cabin for almost two hours,
trying to teach Kodiak to bark when I held up the I love you sign.
If the guys would’ve been awake, I could’ve told them to tell Kodiak to
bark while holding up the sign, associating the two things to teach Kodiak a
new trick.
I was out of luck though, with Willem, Nordin, and Summit still asleep
after a long drive from Homer up to the cabin last night.
I couldn’t get myself to close my eyes again after waking up early, and
although it was starting to get colder up here, I took Kodiak out and gave him
his breakfast because he wasn’t up for naps either.
I sighed as he tilted his head to the side, looking at me with confusion in
his eyes as he tried to understand what I was trying to teach him.
If only I could talk, I thought, wondering if life would’ve been easier if I
had taken the opportunity of getting my voice back with that operation.
Giving up on teaching him a new trick, I placed both hands on his head
and ran my fingers through his thick fur, then I leaned in and kissed the top of
his nose.
At least he was kind enough to kiss me back, licking my face and trying to
jump on me with his front paws on my lap.
I laughed and turned my head, gently pushing him off me and then getting
up to stop his attack of love.
Kodiak became my best friend throughout the last two years, and
whenever the guys didn’t have time for me, it was Kodiak I spent all my time
with.
I turned to walk back inside to see if any of the three were finally waking
up, and once I closed the door, the middle bedroom door opened, exposing a
well-built and still extremely handsome Willem standing there.
Without having to demand it, Kodiak let out a low bark and ran toward
Willem to greet him.
“Down, boy,” he muttered, his voice thick with sleep. “If only we all had
this much energy first thing in the morning,” he added.
I grinned and walked toward him, lifting my hands to sign when his eyes
finally met mine.
We’ve been up for almost two hours.
Signing had become our main way of communicating after Willem and
Nordin got better at it, and I also didn’t have to take it slow anymore,
knowing they were now fluent in sign language.
It still amazed me at times how two grown men could learn sign so fast,
but they wanted to be able to communicate with me the way their younger
brother could, and now they didn’t feel left out anymore.
Morning, sweetness, Willem signed, holding his fists against each other
close to his chest and moving his thumbs down and back up two times.
It was the sign for the word sweetheart, but whenever Willem did it, it
meant sweetness.
