CAT
My wig itches, and once again I silently curse the man who made me wear
it. The jellyfish exhibit at the local aquarium is supposed to be my happy
place, but today the need to scratch thwarts the marine animals’ relaxing
powers. I sneak a finger under the false hairline, searching for the irritating
spot.

I never used to wear a wig to the aquarium. This building was always
my haven. Now, I’m forced to don a disguise if I want any chance of
finding peace in the dim rooms lit only by the blue glow of fish tanks.
After my finger finds and scratches the itch, I sigh in relief, resettling
into my casual stance in front of a round window that peers into the
jellyfish enclosure. A mushroom-shaped head leisurely pulses, dragging
spindly string legs in an arc through the water. I try to match my breathing
to each of the movements, easing my anger to a simmer, hoping to
extinguish the harsh emotion fully.

“Are they really made from jelly?”
The high-pitched voice at my elbow has me flinching back a step. I
thought I was alone in this room in the early afternoon of a Tuesday, or at
least alone in front of this display. But a little girl stares up at me, beads
clacking together on the ends of her tight braids, as she watches my retreat.
She’s a cute kid: gap where she’s missing a front tooth, rounded cheeks,
and curious brown eyes a few shades darker than her skin, except for where
someone painted a mermaid on her face.

People always assume I’m good with children. I think it’s the
combination of being a short, soft-spoken—for the most part—woman in
prime birthing years, but I know zero about what to do with them. Or how
to talk to them. I was the youngest of my siblings, and neither of my sisters
have any offspring that would force me to improve my skills.
If I had candy, I’d consider throwing some treats to distract her as I
hustle away. But my pockets are empty.

At least this child isn’t screaming, or crying, or trying to grab me with
sticky fingers. She stands still, her eyes going back to the glass to watch the
beautiful aquatic dance

I could answer her question. There’s no harm in that.
“Well, not exactly. Jellyfish have three layers. The epidermis, the
mesoglea, and the gastrodermis. The mesoglea is jelly-like, but not the kind
of jelly you eat,” I say, using the same tone I’d tell a drunk customer at my
job they’re getting cut off. The tone says, Look how nice I am! Please don’t
yell at me.
