DARK SECRETS
Spring made way for summer early. Kira sat perched on the open ledge
of the window seat in her room, basking in the day’s waning light. It
was warm and sticky from the humidity outside, but she enjoyed these quiet
moments looking out over the blooming Magnolias. The scent of freshly
mowed lawns lingered in the air, and she could hear her neighbors’ children
as they jumped on a trampoline next door.
As brief as the moment was, it served as a much-appreciated distraction.
It was right around this time last year when things shifted, when the pieces
of her life began falling out of place. Like any puzzle, you rarely realize
that one piece is missing until multiple pieces are gone.
It happened slowly, starting with dreams. Dreams turned into
nightmares. Nightmares turned into late, sleepless nights. She tried to
distract herself by taking on a heavy course load at school, but it only added
to her dilemma, piling additional stress and anxiety onto her already
burdened mind. Fatigue set in making it difficult to concentrate.
It wasn’t in her nature to complain or to unload onto others. Instead, she
fabricated a pretty veneer, lying through her smiles, further insulating
herself. It affected every aspect of her life. Her friendships. Her love life.
And despite every effort she made, the denial was becoming destructive to
her dream of dancing professionally.
Kira thumbed through the pages of her brown leather journal, not
landing on any specific page. The dreams started several weeks before she
ever committed to putting her memories of them down on paper. Even then,
she ripped out the first page once it was written, embarrassed by her own
thoughts and words. And for added measure, she burned it in a desperate act
of reducing the memory to nothingness. The jagged edges of that first
missing page along the center of the binding were still visible. Eventually,
as the dreams persisted, she talked herself into opening the journal once
more. Sitting here now, peering down at countless tear-streaked pages, she
could feel the heavy weight they carried.
The abrupt sound of Kat’s voice startled her. “Hey, you! I’m excited
about tonight! We’re gonna get our T Swift on!” Kat beamed, dancing into
the room, tossing a scrap of black on her bed. “Wear this! You’re gonna
look amazing!”
Kira watched as her friend sauntered out of the door singing her own
version of “I Did Something Bad” with a hairbrush serving as her makeshift
microphone.
Kat was not only her roommate, she was her one saving grace. They
became instant friends after she moved to New Orleans her junior year in
high school. And after the unexpected death of Kira’s parents their senior
year, Kat’s family took her in to live with them.
