Daisy Chadwick woke up before dawn on Christmas morning. Oh, she
was super excited about spending her first Christmas with her new
stepdad on Stonefire. Blake had never had a human-type celebration
before, and hadn’t even complained about how long it took to set up the tree
the night before.

They’d decorated it together. Well, mostly her and Blake. Her mum was
sick all the time from her pregnancy, or so she said. And even though her
mum always tried to help, even when she should be resting, Blake had said
something to make her mum finally agree to watch and give directions from
the sofa. Mostly.

Her mum had drawn the line when it came to Daisy hanging her new
ornament for the year. Every year her mum gave Daisy a new one, wrote the
date on it, and they put it on the tree together. She had eleven of them now
and couldn’t wait until the day she had like fifty of them. Then she wouldn’t
need many other ornaments, just her mismatched collection.
But as she rolled over to look at the clock in the darkness, she saw it was
only four a.m. She wasn’t allowed out of bed until six, and Freddie and his
family wouldn’t come over until after noon.

That was so many hours away.
But while she couldn’t go into the living room until her mum and Blake
woke up, she’d been given permission to go to the kitchen.
Oh, and the loo, of course.
But the kitchen was way more interesting. Not just because of the biscuits
she’d made all by herself the day before—she’d been taking lessons from
Samira, who made the very best ones—but because of Freddie’s present also
being there.

She quickly jumped out of bed, put on her robe, and snuck down the
hallway and stairs. Even though she had permission, Daisy didn’t want to
wake her mum or stepdad. Her mum, especially, needed some sleep. Growing
a baby inside her always made her tired.

Reaching the kitchen, Daisy turned on the lights and went to the big
cardboard box in the corner. Inside, two kittens slept curled together on the
little bed she’d made. One was all black, and the other was black and white.
Even though she knew Freddie would give them names himself, she hadn’t
been able to merely call them “kitten” so she’d dubbed the black and white
one Storm since she was always running around, causing destruction. As for
the all-black boy, she’d called him Shadow because he always followed
Storm around.

Crouching down, Daisy picked up one of the sleeping kittens, Shadow.
The little furry bundle curled up against her and went right back to sleeping.
She scratched behind his ears—just like she did with dragons—and he
purred.

It was going to be super hard to give up the kittens later in the day, but
she knew Freddie had wanted pets for a really, really long time. His mother
had said it would be okay for Daisy to find some and give it as a gift.
Apparently, being eleven meant he was old enough for the responsibility.
She wanted cats herself, but Blake already had one and he didn’t like any
other cats. It was why they had to keep the kittens in the kitchen, away from
Baxter.
