Cole took a deep breath in, envisioning the most delectable and savory
foods imaginable.
“Hm… envision wonderful food.” He breathed out slowly, “UHM… Good
food…” After three long years of intense meditation, fasting, and cleansing,
Cole felt closer to inner peace than ever before in his life. Cole had spent
countless hours in meditation, sometimes up to twelve hours a day. He had
given up all meat, subsisting only on vegetables, herbs, and Olber-green tea.
While his dedication to his spiritual practice had been admirable, he sorely
missed the simple pleasures of food, like grilled beef ribs. Cole knew that if
he was ever to master the art of spell-casting, he needed to achieve inner
peace before Gonken week came to an end.
“Ouch!” He rubbed his bald head where he felt a sharp, stinging
sensation. Something had struck him, though he dared not open his eyes to
see what it was. He had disturbed the sacred silence of the meditation room,
breaking one of the most important rules of Gonken week. His hands
trembled as he wondered if anyone had noticed his transgression.
Tentatively opening his left eye, he glanced around the room. The other
monks had stopped their meditation and were glaring at him with looks of
supreme annoyance. Even Andre, a goblin, who was usually so kind, had
turned an angry shade of brown and his welcoming green eyes had become
a furious red. Cole gulped, realizing he had made a grave mistake.
“Oh, fanny pack.” He whispered under his breath, swallowed the lump
forming in his throat, and closed his eyes tightly. He knew with grim
certainty that he had made a grave mistake. The only hope he clung to was
that the monks would disregard his blunder and continue their meditation
uninterrupted.
When he cautiously peeked open his left eye, he saw to his horror
Andre’s tail poised and ready to deliver a stinging slap. Before he could
react, he found himself hurtling out the open window into the bright
sunlight beyond. He opened both eyes, only to have them assaulted by the
glaring sun. The wind caressed his head with a fleeting sweetness that he
knew would end in bitter pain.
If I land on the hard ground, can I argue my body is too broken to clean
the temple, right? He wondered.
“Like, please, just lemme crash onto somethin’ hard and totally
unforgiving. Concrete or jagged rocks would be, like, ideal,” he prayed.
Much to his chagrin, Cole crashed onto the soft, silky purple lawn grass
outside the temple, his head bumping against the gnarled trunk of the
Marion Berry tree.
“So much for that wish,” he sighed resignedly.
“Now we have to restart Gonken week!” Andre shrieked at him from the
open window above.
