COLLIN
Medical conferences usually intrigued me, but this one kicked
my ass. Thank God it was finally over. This thing was as
dull as they got. The only presentations that seemed to shed
new light on the medical science industry were the lectures Jake and I had
delivered. Everyone else’s talks and presentations made it feel like we were
back in freaking high school when the substitute teachers determined we’d
watch videos from the 1970s in science class.

I guess the most irritating part of this conference was the fact that my
best friend, Jake, Chief Cardiovascular Surgeon, and I were the only
presenters who seemed to have done our goddamn jobs to share our
research. Contrary to what I’d been bored to fucking tears by since this
started three days ago, mine and Jake’s presentations were current, not some
rewind of known case studies from forty years ago.

Thank God I was born with the gift of unwavering patience, or I’d have
left this final lecture of the day. I was at my limit, and I needed a drink.
Tonight, Jake and I would attend the after-party event, something we’d
passed on the previous nights. Maybe one reason no one was complaining
about the boring lectures was that they’d all probably been nursing
hangovers since they got here—one of many reasons not to hold business
functions in Las Vegas.

Vegas came to life at night. I knew that, and I’d lived that on numerous
weekend trips before. This trip, however, I stayed off of the strip and stayed
safely at my hotel’s pool. Granted, it was the biggest party pool oasis I’d
ever seen before in my fucking life, but it was still less trouble than I was
used to. The pool was lit up to create the ambiance of the nightlife,

transporting and treating guests to an enchanting evening in a tropical
paradise. Acres of water, palms, and any other treat you’d expect to find
while vacationing in your own tropical world were present. What wasn’t
present was the gin I needed in my hand right about now. That’s when I
spotted Jake, sitting at a spot that was designed to impress our sizeable
medical group and further this experience by bringing us into an enchanting
Tahitian resort.

I stepped up to where Jake was already seated on a barstool. “Hey, sexy,
looking for a date tonight?” I gripped my best friend’s shoulder as I slid
onto a stool next to him. “I’ll have a Bombay Sapphire, on the rocks.” I
motioned to the bartender who’d moved my direction.
“I don’t date pretentious assholes who drink gin,” Jake said with a laugh
while drinking his scotch. “Jesus, man.” He rubbed his forehead and looked
over at me. “Am I ever glad this shit storm finally blew the fuck out of
here.”

I took a large gulp of my favorite liquor and let the drink bring my mind
back to life again. “Yeah, Obstetrics 101 was my favorite course.”
“Obstetrics 101.” Jake rose his glass to me. “That’s certainly one way of
looking at these fucked-up lectures.”

“Well, this whole conference is easily compared to the nightmare of our
college years. What the fuck was this damn thing for anyway? Hell if I
know anymore.”
