England, 1825
Diana sniffed disdainfully as she stepped over the threshold of her new
home for the first time. She glanced dismissively at the footman as
she tugged off her gloves, dropping them unceremoniously in the ornate
silver platter he offered her. Suppressing a shudder, Diana eyed the ornate
gilded banisters of the grand staircase, the garish colour palette and the
elaborately painted ceiling with contempt.
Blast her father for getting himself so deep in debt, she would never
forgive him for this.
Married, to a commoner. A rich and influential merchant, but still.
She sensed the towering form of her husband move closer behind her,
his hand pressing intimately against her lower back to guide her deeper into
the London townhouse.
Diana felt her heart race at the touch, remembering how he had pressed
his lips firmly against hers after they said their vows at the small ceremony
that morning.
“I have requested dinner be served early, so that you may have
sufficient time to prepare yourself for tonight,” said Hugh, his accent
clipped and harsh to her ears.
Diana shuddered, her stomach twisting in knots at the very mention of
the culmination of this darkest of days.
This might be a marriage of convenience, but it was extremely
inconvenient at this moment.
Diana squared her shoulders and drew on years of training in grace and
decorum, gliding elegantly forward through the halls, up the stairs and even
making it to the safety of her new rooms without losing her composure.
Alone, at last, she flung herself on the elegantly appointed bed and
screamed into the peach silk pillowcase, her lungs burning as she kicked
spitefully against the soft feather mattress.
Well, if her new husband thought she would lie back and submit like a
meek little woman, he would be in for a surprise.

Diana entered the salon at the appointed time, floating into the room with
practised ease. She knew the light blue silk gown showed off her pale blond
hair and fair complexion to perfection.
Hugh stood at her entrance, his wide shoulders constrained in an elegant
evening jacket of black superfine and a fresh cravat perfectly starched and
folded at his neck.
Still, the quality of his clothes could not disguise the signs of hard work
and dubious upbringing. His chiselled face and strong hands were
unfashionably tanned, his nose slightly crooked, as if broken on more than
one occasion. His thighs were thick with muscle, hugged by his breeches in
a way that was practically indecent.
Why did he have to be so big, so overwhelmingly male?
A strange, quickening sensation flickered in the pit of her stomach,
making her cheeks warm as she really looked at her new husband for the
first time.
Hugh cleared his throat gruffly, “Diana, you remember my sisters,
Claire and Mary?” he said, gesturing to the two young girls seated on the
settee.
They rose, their eyes wide with awe, bobbing a quick curtsy and smiling
shyly at her as Hugh waved them back to their seats.
He scowled, “there is no need for that, Diana is my wife, not visiting
royalty. This is your home. And now, hers.”
