I SHOULD’VE KNOWN THE WOMAN WAS GOING TO BE TROUBLE THE
moment she climbed into my truck.
“You can’t steal a mage’s chicken, Emmaline.”
Emmaline Spirett, sister of the newest wolf in my pack and serious pain
in my ass, smiled silkily. “Watch me, Alpha Martinez.”
I stared at the mage’s Craftsman bungalow through the windshield of
my Ford F450—that big ass Texas truck according to my Californian friend
and fellow alpha leader, Lucas Blacke—and wished I were anywhere else.
“I’m not saying you don’t have the ability. I’m saying it’s a bad idea to
steal a chicken from a mage. To steal anything from a mage, really.” I
scratched the back of my neck, found a piece of straw, chucked it out the
open window.
“Well, I’m sure as heck not leaving the chicken here.” Emmaline shifted
forward in the passenger seat, twisted her long, silver-streaked, goldenbrown hair into a messy knot, and secured it with an elastic band she’d had
looped around her wrist. “It’s unsafe.”
I stared hard at her. “Why do I think you came prepared to do this?”
“Don’t be ridiculous. It was a spur of the moment idea.”
She yanked the hood of her thin black sweatshirt over her head and
tugged the drawstrings until the only parts of her face visible were her nose,
cheekbones, and sky-blue eyes.
Cursing, I threw my hat in the backseat and dragged a hand over my
head. Found another piece of straw. Swore at it before tossing it out the
window.
“We’re going to attract a herd of goats with all the hay you’re shedding,”
Emmaline said, voice muffled by her jacket. “Gods, it’s hot.”
“Take off your jacket, then. And it’s straw. It’s bedding for the horses,
not food.”
“Is that your usual job? Straw delivery?”
My scowl felt as deep as the Palo Duro Canyon. “It’s Auntie Gert’s job.
She and my cousin usually handle it, but for some reason she asked me.
Then she said, ‘Since you’ll already be out, could you please drop off
Emmaline and Noah at the mage’s house to do whatever it is they do over
there?’ The answer to that is chicken thievery, apparently.”
“We hardly ever pilfer poultry.”
I looked at her.
She ducked her head in a poor attempt to hide a smile and fiddled with
my radio.
“Leave my music alone.” I ground my back teeth as she switched it to a
station I didn’t recognize. It sounded like a mix of blues and folk.
“This is nice, too. You’ll like it.”
Doubtful, but I didn’t care enough to fight her on it. “You told me you
believed the mage could help Noah.”
“He is helping him. You know as well as I do that getting Noah’s
prehistoric side under control isn’t something that’s going to be solved in a
few visits with a magical.” She tugged at the hem of the sweatshirt. “Cheese
and crackers, it’s six in the evening three days before Christmas. Why is it
so humid and gross out?”
“Welcome to Austin,” I said, dryly. “How did you meet this mage?”
