ONE WEEK AGO
“WHAT ELSE DO I need to know?” Stavros sat back in his chair, yanking at
the tie around his neck with one hand, the other holding the phone to his
ear. “And hurry it up, Bruce.” Not even five minutes after arriving home
from an overseas trip he’d gotten Bruce’s call. He’d barely managed to kiss
Daniel before locking himself in his office, putting out fires.
“Linc is AWOL.”
Stavros huffed, scrubbing a hand over his face. His eyes burned from
lack of sleep since he didn’t sleep as well as he should without Daniel next
to him. A full week of tossing and turning in a too-soft Swedish hotel room
bed and he was dragging.
Seriously.
“What does it matter? We don’t keep tabs on our men.” Normally,
Stavros’ uncle would handle all this shit, but the old man had a health scare
recently that put him out of commission, leaving Stavros to pick up the
slack. He’d been traveling, meeting with clients—those that wanted to meet
face to face—making sure the business ran smoothly. Since his uncle had
Bruce working for him as a right-hand man of sorts, Stavros kept him on to
handle shit in New York while he hopped from country to country.
His group of mercenaries were all over the globe. Business was
booming. But all he wanted was a shower and Daniel in his arms. They
worked together sometimes, he and his lover, but when it came to the
minutiae of the business, Stavros preferred to let Bruce handle that. Turned
out his ex-lover was good at it. Who’d have known?
“Um…”
Goddamn it. He knew enough to know that Bruce was about to deliver
some fucked-up news. “Just tell me.”
“His deadline was time-sensitive. Two days ago.”
Stavros lurched forward. “It’s not done?”
“No.”
“Shit.” He jumped to his feet, tossing his tie across the room. “Shit.”
There was a reason his business was well known in certain circles. He
delivered. Always. “What do we know?”
“The last time Linc made contact was to accept the offer. I initiated
when he didn’t send word of completion. No response.”
They didn’t police their men. They put out the offers, the men accepted
them, and then sent word via encrypted messages when the job was done.
The client’s payment of the final half of Stavros’ hefty fee served as
confirmation enough that the job had been carried out satisfactorily. He’d
never been stiffed on payment. Who’d be suicidal enough not to pay him?
He’d never not delivered as promised either.
“Assign somebody else the job, double their usual fee, then find Linc,”
he hissed at Bruce. “When that’s done, reach out to the client with our
apologies. Call me back when it’s done.”
“Yes, sir.”
