Finally!
Movemen caught the corner of Zendalia’s eye, drawing her
attention away from the fluorescent red coral that she had never seen
at home. Her heart raced wildly at the second sign of life, the one she had
come there for. Another flick of the tail ahead of her prompted her to move.
She changed direction as quickly as the armor shielding her torso
allowed. Zendalia stayed in the waves of movement created by her target.
The dark water down here was difficult to pierce with her gaze, but she
wasn’t going to lose her prey again. Water sluiced along Zendalia’s scales,
guiding her speed and direction as she swam. Moving her tail back and
forth, she kept her speed as she dove into the next sounding of the ocean,
going deeper into the darker water and farther from home. The temperature
cooled with each new plunge toward the ocean floor. She could taste victory
already, knowing just how close she was to success after months of
planning and searching. All the muscles in her body were taut with
readiness—this was what she had trained for.
The armor pinched against the skin of her torso. It was a couple sizes
too small for her, but she’d made do with what she managed to snag
without causing waves. Her breath rasped in and out of the mask she wore
to help with breathing. It was too small for her, but she would never be able
to survive in these deep soundings without it. Pressure on her lungs beneath
the armor made her pull harder on the device to the point that she wheezed.
It had taken time for her to get used to breathing this way, but again,
necessary. Movement again to her left brought her attention back to the goal
at hand.
Revenge!
Another quick change of direction and Zendalia was back on top of her
target. She wasn’t going to let her get away again. That dark face hadn’t left
her memory in the intervening months, the way her cheeks had been
hollowed out, her dark, almost black eyes that showed no emotion—no
remorse. She’d been strong, her muscles tightening as Zendalia had gotten
close to her, her tail long and powerful. But then she’d been gone before
Zendalia could do anything. Everything had become about finding that
treacherous mer again. Narrowing her focus, Zendalia followed the ripples
in the water, the push against the current streams that would tell her exactly
where her target had gone.
How did she move so quickly in these depths?
Light barely filtered through the layers of water, and the bright colors
Zendalia had always known grew dimmer and further between sightings.
Coral was a homogeneous gray while seaweed thinned and dust particles
filled the empty space between rocks. Sound was harder to hear, though that
could have been the straps on the mask pressed hard against her face so she
could breathe. Zendalia slowed her descent and listened to what the water
told her.
