CARTEL
I SAT BACK WATCHING my oldest brother, Jamison, dancing with
his bride-to-be, with a smile on my face. My heart was overwhelmed with
happiness for him. For a while after his first wife died, I wasn’t sure he
would ever open his heart to love again. Then came Aleviyah. Sis was a
blessing.

We all called it the day she showed up at his home for a meet and greet.
I had a bet going with my brothers that he would fall for her before her
contract was up. That reminded me, Reese owed me a smooth three
hundred dollars, and I was going to collect it from him one way or the other.
Watching my brother finally happy again had me thinking about my
own shit. I prided myself on making smart decisions when it came to
women. I was a man who could have almost any woman I wanted, yet the
one I was in love with was the furthest from being mine.
Adina Harold.

Object of my affection, keeper of my heart, was a married woman.
Unhappily married, but married, nonetheless. When I met her over a year
ago, I never imagined that shit would be taken as far as it had. She was a
customer, dining at my restaurant, and she was there with her no-good,
lying, cheating, abusive ass husband.
I had no business giving her my number.

I had no business answering her call.
I had no business carrying on conversations with her, and I damn sure
had no business falling in love. I hadn’t even fucked her, hadn’t tasted, or
smelled her pussy, yet I was drunk in love with her.

I told Adina long ago to let me handle him so I could take care of her. I
wanted to be the man she could come to lay her burdens on, knowing I
could carry them for her. She didn’t deserve what she was going through.
She deserved the love of a good man. She deserved flowers and gifts and to
be told she was beautiful every fucking day.

Chemistry and conversation were a muthafucka. I literally talked to this
woman until I fell for her, and now I couldn’t get out. I was in so deep with
her that I had the unsavory urge to just take her and kill her husband. After
all he’d done, death would welcome him at the deepest, darkest pits of hell.
I was playing a dangerous game, but lucky for a nigga like me, I wasn’t
scared of a single muthafucka, because we all bleed the same.
The sound of my phone ringing broke me from my thoughts. I looked
down to see Adina’s number. It was strange because she never called this
early.

I answered the phone, silently, only to be greeted by heavy breathing on
the other end of the line. I could hear the faintest of whimpers in the
background.

“Adina?” I called out.
A deep, angry voice came through the earpiece. “Who the fuck is this?”
“Where is she?”

He laughed menacingly. “She’s about to be a dead bitch. How long you
been fucking my wife, nigga?”
“How long you been beating her ass?”
