If there was one thing Finn knew about Theo, it was that he loved to
party. If there was a party in town and there was alcohol, Theo would be
there. It was only natural that Theo would eventually have asked Finn to
come with him to one, seeing as they had been best friends for almost a
year. This was his first time asking Finn to come. Theo said Finn needed to
go to at least one high school party before they graduate, and Finn
reluctantly agreed to it, with little convincing needed from Theo. Finn was
not a partier nor a drinker. He had no business being at a party, but for Theo
he decided he would be someone that does. He wanted to be ‘cool’ for
Theo.
As Theo pulled up in front of the house with Finn in the passenger
seat, Finn realized he’d made a big mistake. After getting out of the car and
as he walked up the driveway, he could hear thumping bass and screams
coming from inside the house. A part of him wanted to make a run for it,
but another part of him wanted to stay close to Theo.
Back when he lived in Austin, Texas before he moved to Cape May in
June of 2021, Finn was never invited to a high school party. Finn was even
more of a loner before he moved to Cape May, and he barely had any
friends. He would just put his head down and study for most of his high
school life until he moved here. He never had a typical high school
experience socially. Finn always prioritized his studies so that he could get
into Columbia University, his dream school that he actually got in to. He
thought high school parties were just a distraction and that having a social
life would just prevent him from getting everything he ever wanted. That is,
until he found his friendship with Theo. After that, whatever Theo wanted
to do, Finn found himself following along. Except when it came to parties.
“What the hell am I getting myself into,” Finn said. Theo turned to him
and snorted, shaking his head playfully.
“It’s not as bad as you think, trust me. People are just here to party and
have fun. No one is looking at what everyone else is doing. You’ll blend in
just fine, Finn,” Theo said, reassuring him.
“I know, but I can barely stand to be around people when they’re
acting stupid, and their breath smells too much like alcohol. There has to be
a better way to have fun tonight,” Finn said with desperation, eyes darting
around, looking for an escape. Theo sped up and walked in front of Finn to
face him and put his hands on Finn’s shoulders.
“Hey. These things can be fun if you learn to loosen up. I know you’re
more of a stay-inside-watching-movies type of guy, but remember, it’s the
last summer before college, and you won’t get to experience something like
a high school party ever again once we’re out.”
Finn nodded, sighing in defeat as he looked at the ground.
