A PROMISE AND A
PROPOSAL
One more day, and Stedd Greycastle would ask Ara Isilo to be his
wife.
Smiling to himself, Stedd allowed Ara to tug him through the
palace gardens, her hand soft and warm in his weathered and calloused
palm. Everywhere she went, she made sure he followed, refusing to let him
miss any of her adventures.
Except for today. Even if it weren’t illegal for Selene to come and go
from Shaethdell, he wasn’t ready to return to the site where five years ago,
his family had been mercilessly slaughtered during Vayne Savant’s coup.
“Come on,” Ara said, turning back to face him with a bright grin. “I
wanted to show you the improvements I’ve made to my watering system
before I leave.”
That smile, the soft lilt of her voice—he’d spent almost every day of the
last five years with her, but today, his nerves told him to treat these precious
moments as though the single day she’d be gone would stretch for years.
Stedd followed her through the maze of shrubs and hedges to an area
she’d set aside for herself to work. Dozens of varieties of flowers grew
here, many of which she’d bred into vibrant colors.
“No luck on those blue lilies?” he asked.
“Unfortunately not,” she said. “I know the color of the Midnight Lilah
isn’t replicable, but surely I can get a close enough shade to make dyes.”
With a sigh, she led him to a flourishing vegetable garden and knelt,
tugging him down with her.
“Sisters,” Stedd cursed. “Ara, I swear these cucumber plants have
doubled in size in the last ten-day.”
“It’s this new way of watering.” Ara tucked her dark brown hair behind
her shoulders, then placed her hand on his back and pushed aside some
leaves. “I finished the buckets earlier this week, and I’ve added lime to the
water, which seems to be helping.”
That’s a serious understatement. The plants towered several hands
above them. Marveling, he peered through the tangle of leaves and vines to
examine a curious system of small cans with holes pricked in the bottom,
which traveled along a track to distribute water around the stems.
“I need to find a better way to pipe water to the buckets,” Ara
explained. “But that’s a problem for the Ara of tomorrow to solve.” She
reached through the vines to pluck a fist-sized yellow cucumber and
brushed off the tiny thorns before taking a bite. “Sisters, that’s good. Here.”
Stedd took the sweet vegetable and finished it as they headed over to
her gazebo. “You may be the only person who can grow a vegetable that
tastes better than candy.”
