Aru stood motionless and silent behind Dagor’s chair, watching the
laptop screen. The video quality of the bug perched on Doctor
Julian’s shoulder was remarkably clear, and what Aru saw twisted his
gut with worry.
Gabi looked drained, so pale and gaunt that she seemed almost ethereal.
Her once vibrant and animated face was drawn, and her small frame barely
made a rise under the blanket.

The contrast between the woman he’d known intimately over the last few
days and the vulnerable figure in the hospital bed was jarring. In his
memories she’d seemed like a force, a spirit that filled his heart and any
space she occupied with her quirky personality and vivacious energy.
He was a damn god, and yet he was completely helpless to do anything
about it. What were all his godly powers good for if he couldn’t help her?
Make her better?
Worse, Aru couldn’t even hold the hand of the woman he cared for in her
time of need, and putting his faith in the doctor was not something he was
even remotely comfortable with.

Julian was the immortal descendant of the rebel gods, and Aru didn’t know
where he had gotten his education. Did he even know how to take care of
Gabi?
As the urge to go to her became overwhelming, his grip on the back of
Dagor’s chair tightened to the point of the wood groaning in protest.
“Cut it out.” Dagor looked at him over his shoulder. “You’re going to break
the chair.”
“She doesn’t look good,” Aru murmured.

“On the contrary.” Dagor turned back to the laptop screen. “She’s a looker. I
can understand now why you are so obsessed with her.”
Over on the couch, Negal chuckled. “A human female’s beauty can’t
compare to that of a goddess. It shouldn’t affect you.”
That was true. Gabi lacked the perfection of the goddesses back home, but
her imperfections, her uniqueness, only made her more beautiful to Aru.
“Beauty is in the eye of the beholder,” Aru said without sparing Negal a
glance. “And there is much more to it than physicality. It’s the bright soul
animating Gabi’s body that makes her beautiful.”
“If you say so,” was the trooper’s sarcastic response.

“Your sister is doing very well.” On the screen, the doctor turned to look at
Gabi’s brother, who appeared to be standing, given the angle of the bug’s
camera. “Her vitals are strong, and her bouts of unconsciousness don’t last
more than a few hours at a time. You should get some rest, Gilbert.”
As relief flooded Aru, he let out a breath. That was good news.
That was excellent news.
