“Sometimes we must do evil to defeat evil.”
My mother’s words ring through my mind. I took them to heart all
those years ago, and now my brand of evil is treason, selling secrets
from the gilded ivory palace in exchange for saving the people of its
crumbling city.
Will this secret be my undoing? Will it bring ruin to the kingdom I’m
desperate to save?
No, not this one.

“Ten of the fourteen ships in the Emerald Sea have been diverted
northeast for the time being,” I say, dropping the tone and pitch of my voice
as I always do when speaking to my black-market whisperer.
His dark eyes dart around the lavish, crowded brothel, and he adjusts his
domino mask. “That’ll get you five silver.”
“Five silver,” I hiss angrily. “Naval movements were worth two gold last
time.”
“Well, your updates were more valuable last time.” He doesn’t meet my
gaze, so I can’t delve his thoughts, but glee wafts off him in waves. He
knows I have more.

I’ve learned to withhold as much information as possible to haggle with.
Every extra gold is another mouth fed, another health tonic for a sick man,
or another bed for an orphaned child.

“They’ve been diverted to hunt Emerald selkies,” I whisper.
“Emerald selkies?” he repeats, his surprised gaze meeting mine.
“That can’t be. They’re extinct.” His thought shimmers in his eyes, and I
catch just the essence of it in his gaze before he pulls away to admire a
couple fornicating on a plush red chaise.

As much as I want to reply to his thoughts, I reply to his words. “Yes,
selkies.”
“How do you know this?” he asks, and his outward demeanor shifts to be
aloof, but his emotions are roiling. Excitement is palpable in his aura, and I
tamp down on my magus ability just to withstand it.
“How do I know anything I’ve ever told you?” I retort, leaning in until
my painted lips brush the tip of his ear. “None of your fucking business.
Now, pay me.”

His cheeks turn scarlet under his mask and anger sours his mood. He slips
a gold coin into my waiting hand.
“What the fuck is this?” I whisper.

“Your payment,” he remarks with a smug expression.
Fire burns through my chest and my hand snaps out without permission. I
grab his wrist just as he’s about to take a drink, and our eyes lock.

“Who the fuck does she think—”
“I just handed you intel on one of the most powerful sea creatures in all
of Gaien,” I say, anger seething through my voice. “You will pay me more,
or I will make a scene.”
