“I swear you get on my last nerve.” Gage chuckled as Drake laughed.
“You know damn well you didn’t find Mr. Right.”
“He was at least Mr. Horny,” Drake replied from the opposite side of
the table. They were seated at in Fearless Fox, a local tavern. “At least I’m
looking.”

Gage shrugged. “I’m too damaged beyond repair.”
Tido snickered. “If only we were all as damaged as you. I’d give
anything to have your looks.”
But not my life. No one deserves what I’m going through. “Looks aren’t
everything, Tido. And besides, you’re cute as hell, so I don’t see where the
jealousy is coming from.”

None of them knew of Gage’s past, what had taken place two years ago,
or even that he was a fairy. Well, Elijah knew but only about the fairy part.
He had no idea what Gage was hiding, but in order to keep his profile as
low as possible, he made sure none of his human friends found out.
Elijah shoved at Tido. “What kind of thing is that to say? He just
admitted he’s damaged, and you envy his looks?”
Gage tugged on his Rasta cap, making sure it was covering his pointy
ears.

“I was joking,” Gage said. He wasn’t joking, but if he didn’t say that,
the three might try to dig deeper. His past was a place Gage didn’t want
anyone to go.

Drake snickered. “Come on, Gage. You can’t tell us you don’t have any
juicy stories about yourself. We all do.”
Gage’s heart stuttered at the words. If only they knew. But he couldn’t
tell them. He couldn’t let anyone else in. Not after what had happened.
“I’ll pass,” he said, forcing a smile.

“Suit yourself,” Tido replied, grinning. “But you don’t know what
you’re missing.”
Gage let out a soft laugh, relieved that his friends hadn’t pushed the
issue. He took a sip of his soda, watching the crowd move around them. He
felt a strange sense of detachment, as if he were merely a spectator of the
world going by.

It was then that he spotted a tall, muscular man with dark blond hair and
piercing blue eyes. He was sitting at the bar, nursing a drink, his gaze
scanning the room.
Gage’s heart skipped a beat as their eyes locked. He felt a jolt of
something electric go through him, and he looked away, feeling exposed
and vulnerable.
“Hey, you okay?” Drake asked, clearly noticing the change in Gage’s
demeanor.

Gage forced another smile. He seemed to do that a lot. “Yeah, just got
lost in thought.”
Drake shrugged. “All right then. You want another drink?”
“The would be perfect.” Gage picked up a chicken wing from the
basket in the center of the table and lay it on the napkin in front of him. “I’ll
go get the next round.”

His eyes shifting furtively around the room, Gage made his way to the
bar. He had to admit the dark blond man was gorgeous. But Gage knew
better than to be attracted to someone like him. With his past, he couldn’t
afford to get involved with anyone who might bring unwanted attention.
