INTO THE WOODS
Present day, ten years later.
“You must soon make a decision,” Queen Isadora of Belengaria
said. She leaned forward in her deep green velvet-covered armchair, her
hazel-brown eyes earnest. “Lorenzo, you are twenty-four years old. It is
time.”
“Your mother is right,” King Santiago agreed. He sat in a matching chair
across from his wife in his study. His countenance was stern, his dark
brown gaze direct and unyielding. “You have put off your duty long
enough.”

Lorenzo sighed. His own hazel eyes stared down into his goblet of wine,
then shifted his gaze to the fire in the hearth before them. He ran a hand
through his wavy, shoulder length brown hair. “Twenty-four is not so very
old,” he protested. It was a weak effort, and he knew it.
“It is old enough to marry. To produce an heir and secure the family line.”
The king’s tone was firm and held a note of finality.

“I did recently hear of a princess in peril, in the kingdom of Valenci. The
rumor is that she is being held by a wicked witch,” the queen offered,
referring to a small neighboring country to the east.
Lorenzo sighed. “I have not found the right woman thus far in our own
kingdom, so why not look in Valenci? You win, Mother, Father. I will
depart within the week.” He stood, drained his wine, set his goblet on a side
table, and left his parents murmuring to each other behind him.
He strode through the halls and out of the main entrance, all the way to
the stables.

“Mateo,” he called from the doorway, peering into the shadowed building.
“Are you in there?”
“Yes, Sire.” The young stablemaster popped out from the stall he was
mucking, pitchfork in hand.
“Hello, old friend.” Lorenzo smiled. He was royal and Mateo a
commoner, but they had grown up together and Lorenzo did consider him a
friend. “How is Marte’s hoof? Is he up for a long journey?”
“I think he is fully healed, yes.” Mateo set the tool down and met Lorenzo
in the doorway.

“Good. I will leave in three days.” He paused and glanced around,
ensuring they were alone. He didn’t need anyone else hearing him complain
about his parents. “They will not give up on finding me a wife, Mat. I
cannot sit here and listen to it anymore. I have tried, as you know, to find a
suitable match.”
Mateo nodded and gave a slight shrug. “I admit I’m not sure what it is
you require in a woman, because many of the contenders seemed quite
pleasant, and attractive as well.”

“I’m not sure myself. I feel they all wear a mask; they can’t help it. Life at
court is such that none can show their true selves. But I cannot marry a
woman without even a glimpse of the truth of her.”
“You are too romantic. You are a prince. You marry for the good of your
kingdom.”
