I tested the snow with my boot, leaning forward and back, and then lifted
my foot. The ground was hard, but the snow was melting fast despite
the clip at which it was falling.
Winter was officially here, although we weren’t expecting a big
snowfall today, according to local standards. A few inches were supposed to
pile up and then be gone by the following afternoon. It wouldn’t be long
before the snow started to stick, though.
I had no idea how I felt about the snow. I, Scout Randall, was strangely
ambivalent about many things these days, and that wasn’t my way.
“What are you doing?” a voice asked from behind me.
I looked over my shoulder to find my live-in love, Gunner Stratton,
watching me from the porch. His feet were bare, and he wore a dirty white
T-shirt. We’d been working inside, upgrading the cabin we were buying
from our boss so it could be our permanent home. I’d needed some air. I
hadn’t meant to be outside as long as I obviously had been. I’d lost track of
time. That was happening more and more frequently.
“I’m thinking,” I replied, moving my foot to a fresh spot and pressing
down. The snow beneath my foot disappeared when I lifted my boot.
“What are you thinking about?” Gunner moved closer to the railing.
Our cat Merlin poked his head out from the door behind Gunner, lifted his
nose, and then immediately dove back into the cabin. He had no interest in
investigating the great outdoors unless the weather was more agreeable.
“A few things,” I replied. My mind had been a blizzard of jagged
memories for two weeks now, ever since my parents appeared for the first
time in decades and one of our co-workers, a woman I’d trusted and liked,
had turned out to be the very enemy we were seeking.
“Scout, don’t make me come out there,” Gunner warned. He was a
shifter, so the cold didn’t bother him like it did me. I wasn’t wearing a coat,
but I knew better than wandering outside without boots. Gunner wouldn’t
bother with either if he decided it was time to drag me back inside. “Talk to
me.”
Slowly, I tracked my eyes to him. He was a beautiful specimen of a
man. He had shoulder-length dark hair and was built like a television hero.
He was funny, occasionally whiny, and often self-deprecating. We meshed
well. How could I make him understand what I was feeling when I couldn’t
even get a firm grasp on it?
“Do you really want to know what I’m thinking?” I asked after several
seconds of silence.
Gunner nodded as he rested his hands on the railing and waited.
“My parents picked the names Rick and Andrea when they moved to
this area,” I replied. “They knew I would come here eventually, and they
opted to wait rather than search for me in the city because they thought it
would be fruitless.”
“Are you angry they made that decision?” he asked.
“Nope.” I shook my head. “I’m confused because they picked names
from The Walking Dead.”
Gunner moved his jaw but didn’t respond.
