HONEY
Honey Peterson turned down the small country road, feeling excited
about the interview she was headed out to do.
It was a brisk autumn day, the kind she loved. The leaves were
nearly all off the trees that lined the streets, leaving the silvery branches
bare and ready for snow. She smiled in surprise when she caught sight of
her very first Christmas decorations of the year.

It wasn’t even Thanksgiving yet, and in the tiny town of Trinity Falls,
Pennsylvania, most folks had pumpkins sitting beside pots of yellow and
flame-orange mums out on their porches to celebrate the harvest.
But the owner of this sweet little farmhouse way out on Applebough
Lane was clearly eager to get ahead of the curve. Christmas wasn’t exactly
Honey’s favorite holiday, but even she had to admit that the quaint
decorations were a nice touch. A beautiful manger scene, complete with
shepherds and kings, took center stage across the front yard. A small red
Santa Claus with a tiny reindeer stood on one side of the walkway up to the
front porch, and a blue and white snowman guarded the other. A cheerful
wreath of red berries graced the wooden front door.

She glanced at the mailbox and saw that she was in the right place—
number fifty-eight.
“This is it,” she said to herself, feeling pleased that the subject of
today’s segment was a man who enjoyed decorating for the holidays.
Honey loved the kind of people who got excited about things—people
who celebrated and leaned in when it came to the simple, good things in
life.

It was why she was still with Channel 12, mostly doing what other
reporters might call puff pieces. Honey couldn’t get enough of reporting on
feel-good, human-interest stories in her hometown. If there was any
worthier news in the world, she didn’t need to hear about it.
As Honey parked her car, her cameraman, Alan, pulled up right behind
her in the station van.

Alan knew by now that Honey liked to linger with her subjects
sometimes, especially the older ones. She told him it was for her wrap-ups,
but they both knew she really just enjoyed spending time with people and
making sure they felt good about the interview they had given. She and
Alan had taken to driving separately so he could rush back to the station to
start editing and Honey could stay until the star of the day’s segment was
finished sharing their wisdom and ready to say goodbye to the person
bringing them their fifteen minutes of local fame.
