My fingers prickled with heat as I pulled the glasses from the dishwasher
behind the bar, polishing them before the steam faded.
I watched the empty stages and the undulating lights as the patrons
filtered in, filling up the chairs and the air with the low rumble of
conversation.
The Nocturnal was true to its name, with a roster of Counterpart
dancers from every clan, each one more beautiful than the last. We were the
only club on the border between the Betwixt and the Dark proper, allowing
people to dip a toe into the Dark without fully stepping foot into the
territory.
There were no stools at the bar, to discourage loitering. The
waitresses wove through the masses, gathering orders and answering
questions about the evening’s line-up. Tickets began to come in, but it was
slow as we waited for the lights to drop and the first act to appear.
I’d worked for Addison Steele for a year, barely a blink to a
Counterpart, but I turned up on time, and the tips were good enough to
warrant the commute from the Betwixt most nights of the week. I needed
the Geld more than I wanted to admit, and while I never felt unsafe at The
Nocturnal, the journey to and from the club was a different story.
“Ivy!”
My head snapped to the side, a ponytail of dark hair whipping my
face as I turned to the side of the bar. One of the dancers, Sasha, stood in a
dressing gown. Her face was bare of makeup, and though her expression
was blank, I knew something was very wrong. No dancer would risk
Addison’s wrath by being seen on the floor without a stitch of clothing—
unless they were on stage—especially without a bouncer.
I rushed over to Sasha. “What’s wrong?”
“How did you—” She shook her head. “Never mind. It’s Lacey. She
needs your help.”
“Lacey?” I frowned, taking a moment to place the name. “Why does
she want me?”
“You’re a medic, right? Not a Healer, but Archaic medicine?” Sasha
probed, glancing over her shoulder to ensure no one was eavesdropping on
our conversation.
“Sure.” I shrugged, not taking my eyes off the dancer. “But if she
needs help, she should call a Healer.”
Sasha waved away my concern. “Come with me.”
I glanced back at the bar and gestured to my co-bartender to watch
the tickets for a moment, knowing that I was forgoing my break by leaving
my station. Sasha grabbed my hand, pulling me through the staff-only door,
past the lockers, and down to the dressing rooms—a place I’d never had a
reason to visit before.
The bouncer at the door paid no mind as Sasha pulled me inside.
The dark markings covering the bouncer’s throat showed that he was a
Counterpart, just like Sasha and the other dancers.
A hush swathed the dressing room, hanging in the air like expensive
perfume. Unease crawled over my skin as I stepped further into the foreign
space. Even though I’d never been inside the dressing room before,
