“Come on, Scarlet. The guy is a creep. Dump him. He’s not Daddy
material. He treats you like a possession.”
This isn’t the first time I’ve told my sister this. The guy she’s dating has
been being a jerk for months, and instead of leaving him like she should,
she’s been letting him treat her like shit.
It pisses me off to see my sister—who is also my very best friend—be
treated like she’s nothing. I hadn’t liked the sound of the guy from the very
first time she’d told me about him, but he’d treated her well in the
beginning, so I had kept my mouth shut. But now, it’s impossible to be
quiet. She deserves so much better.
Scarlet shrugs and takes a sip of her energy drink before setting it on the
counter where she’ll surely leave it for days before she’ll finally throw it
away. “Cali, he’s just stressed. Work has been crazy for him and he’s under
a lot of pressure. You know he’s about to become the boss.”
I can’t stop myself from rolling my eyes. “He’s a gangster, Scar. I doubt
that can be considered actual work. And if he can’t handle the stress, maybe
he shouldn’t be the boss.”
Her eyes widen. “You swore you’d never speak about it again.”
I’d known the guy did some shady business from the get-go, but it
wasn’t until Scarlet and I got drunk off a cheap bottle of wine one night that
she told me he was in the mob. Then she swore me to secrecy because she
wasn’t supposed to tell anyone.
We never spoke about it again after that but
it made me worry for her safety. Surely being the girlfriend of a mobster
wasn’t exactly safe. What do I know, though? I haven’t had a boyfriend
since high school, and my dating life in general is basically non-existent, so
I really have no room to talk.
“Sorry. I just wish you would take a step back and really look at the way
he treats you. He doesn’t take care of you the way a Daddy should. He
seems really selfish, and it’s like you have to earn his attention and
affection.”
I hate ragging on my sister but she needs to hear it, even though I feel
like an ass when her bottom lip starts trembling.
Bringing her hands up to her eyes, she wipes away the tears that start
falling. “I just… I don’t know if he’ll let me break up with him, Cali.”
My eyes widen because this is the first time she’s ever said anything
like this. “What do you mean, let you? He doesn’t have to let you do
anything. Just because you’re Little doesn’t mean you can’t make your own
choices.”
Both my sister and I discovered we were Little when we were in high
school. We’re not sure if our fucked-up childhood is why we want a man
who Daddies and dominates us, but whatever it is, it’s something we both
realized we wanted and needed when we were teenagers.
