FIVE DAYS HAD PASSED since the aliens invaded Earth. Five days of
grueling slaughter and warfare. Five days of little to no sleep, extreme
hunger, pain, and being under constant threat of losing my life.
The battles were horrifying and nothing any amount of training could
have ever prepared me for. I had lost so many soldiers, friends, comrades
that only compartmentalizing kept me sane.

I was a blue-eyed, spoiled, teenage brat when I signed up with the United
States Marine Corps, after having watched one too many action movies and
thinking myself invincible.

Four years in, I realized I had become disillusioned. Life in the Marine
Corps was hard, especially for a woman. I was assigned desk duty as an
administrative assistant to Colonel Spencer Taylor for those years—a
glorified secretary, really—and realized that if I wanted to stay in the Corps
and make something of myself I had to apply and go through officer
training to move up in rank, or leave the Corps altogether once my contract
was up.

For lack of better options, I opted to go through officer training.
Bad choice, Ashley, bad choice, I reprimanded myself for the umpteenth
time in the last five days.

“Lieutenant, we lost contact with Echo,” my communications sergeant
informed me in his stoic way that didn’t portray any emotions over the
FUBAR—fucked up beyond any repair—situation we found ourselves in.
“What about reinforcements?” I asked Sergeant Donovan to contact HQ
for reinforcements hours ago.

“Negative, ma’am. Commander Torres says we’re on our own,” Donovan
relayed my orders to me.
“Dammit.” I added a few more choice words to my curse. “You told them
that we’re sitting ducks here?”
“Yes, ma’am. He said, and I quote, ‘Get out of there, Lieutenant, and may
God be with you,’” Donovan repeated.

Get out of there, my mind mocked. That was easier said than done.
Five days ago, when the aliens first attacked all over the globe, I was
ordered to take ten squads and assist with the evacuation of Seattle. Five
days later I was down to two squads. For every alien we took down, ten
more appeared. They were like a never-ending wave of deadly locusts,
swarming our planet, and indiscriminately either killing or taking people
prisoner.

Against my superior’s warning, I joined the squads to be on the ground
instead of safe and sound at headquarters like my superiors, a decision I
didn’t regret, no matter if I was going to die here or not. I would never lead
men and women under my command anywhere I wasn’t willing to go
myself.

Seven soldiers and I set up a temporary command center inside a
nondescript pharmacy/convenience store building in the center of the zone
we were assigned to evacuate. Within twelve hours we realized we were
trapped
