The slot opened on the cell room door, and Officer Kevin Newman slid
the dinner tray inside. On the cot, a monstrous man with an unshaven
face glared at him, as if wishing death on the officer and his family.
Newman looked away. It was critical not to show fear around the inmates,
but this was Victor Bacchus, lord of a Rochester crime syndicate.
Rumors claimed Bacchus had murdered more than a hundred people.
Newman didn’t believe the rumors, yet he never questioned the danger of
approaching the convict’s cell. He worried the mob boss, who maintained
ties with the outside world, would put a hit on him. Or a loved one. He
couldn’t wait to be rid of the killer.

“Last meal, Bacchus. Eat up.”
Newman snapped the slot shut and backed away. Bacchus growled and
rose to his feet. Standing, the man towered above the officer.
“You make it sound like I’m going to the electric chair,” Bacchus said.
“New York doesn’t do that anymore.”
“Can’t wait until I leave, can you, Newman?”
“Smile, Victor. You want a change of scenery, right?”
“Buffalo,” Bacchus spat. “Who the hell wants to spend eternity in the
great north?”

“Look at it this way: When the guards let you wander the yard during
recess, you’ll see nature in the distance. Better than here. We have nothing
but concrete and skyscrapers.”
“I like New York City.”

“But Buffalo is closer to your people.”
Bacchus stood before the shatterproof glass and gave Newman an evil
grin.
“Think my people, as you so aptly described them, don’t come this
way?”

Officer Newman didn’t want to think about the state’s most dangerous
crime syndicate moving through New York’s boroughs.
Bacchus snatched the tray and carried it back to his cot, where he
chiseled through a hunk of bloody meat. When he chewed, the juice dripped
down his chin like a cannibal’s rictus. There was something unsettling
about the mobster. Not just because he’d murdered his enemies. He walked
the razor’s edge between stability and insanity. Prison had pushed the man
closer to the brink. One more nudge, and there was no telling what Bacchus
would become.

“Don’t miss me too much,” he said between mouthfuls.
Newman shook his head in disgust. He was thankful he only had to
spend one night playing nursemaid to Bacchus before they escorted the
convict to Buffalo.

“No chance of that happening,” Newman mumbled.
He moved to the next cell and placed the dinner tray in the slot. By the
time he reached the end of the cell block, he saw Officer Fleming going
from door to door, ensuring everyone was locked in for the night. Fleming
stopped at Bacchus’ cage and shot him a grin. For whatever reason, Officer
Fleming got along with the mob boss. Fleming was part of the team charged
with transporting Bacchus to Buffalo.
