“And for those of you who have Dallas as your final destination,
we’d like to thank you for traveling with us today and hope you
enjoy your time in the United States. Howdy, y’all.”
Julia groaned lightly at the hokey farewell as she sat back in her seat,
waiting for the plane to clear. She was exhausted. She was in good shape,
but there was no way that anyone, not even a professional traveler, wouldn’t
be exhausted after nearly twenty-four hours of plane flights and airport
hustle and bustle.

And she wasn’t a professional. So her back ached like she’d been in the
saddle for ten hours straight, and her nasal passages were somehow both
stuffed and dry simultaneously.

Doesn’t matter, she thought as she waited for the rows in front of her to
clear out. No need to rush, she reminded herself. It would only make her
more tired. Besides, she thought, last stop … more or less.
In a few minutes, the aisle cleared and she grabbed her backpack,
getting off. She traveled light, not needing much beyond the jeans she was
wearing, a spare pair in her bag, and a beautiful dress she’d picked up in
Argentina.

She knew she’d get the rest of what she needed when she arrived in
Saint Cloud. If anything, she bet her aunt Amanda had already pre-ordered
a lot of what she’d need to get started here again in Texas.
The immigration officer looked tired, but he smiled at her as she spoke
in her clear Midwestern accent and showed her blue passport.
Aunt Amanda herself was waiting for her once she got through customs,
and Julia felt like she was looking in a time-warping mirror, even if her aunt
hadn’t been born a Munoz. They were the same height at five-foot-eight,
with straight black hair that stretched to below their shoulder blades. She
even had the same eyes.

If I’m this well put together after three kids and in my fifties, I’m going
to be one happy woman, Julia thought as she hugged Amanda. “Aunt
Amanda, how are you? It’s been too long,” she said in Spanish.
“Enough of that,” Aunt Amanda said sternly, releasing Julia and
stepping back. Seeing Julia’s surprised expression, Amanda’s face softened.

“You’re back in the United States now, Julia. And while I know you stayed
in touch with the family and probably watched more Netflix than you
should have, the business language of the ranch is English.”
Julia sighed, nodding. “I thought the family still spoke Spanish to each
other, though?”

“Oh, we do from time to time,” Amanda said with a twinkle in her eye,
clearly understanding and commiserating with her niece’s feelings. “But
you need to get back into the rhythm. We’ve got a new batch of summer
hands coming on, and most of them aren’t bilingual. And the customers are
going to be seeing you a lot.”
