“Lookie there, boys. Ain’t that the new Negro girl the reverend hired?”
someone called in a jeering tone as Dr. Beth Addison rode by the crude
wooden shack that served as the mining town’s most popular drinking
establishment. “The one who says she’s a doctor?”
Even at this early hour, a group of rough-looking miners loitered outside the
saloon’s entrance.
“Not a bad-lookin’ black wench,” someone else commented loudly in a
slurred voice. “Hey, doc, I got an itch down there. How about you scratch it
for me?”
A chorus of hoots and whistles rose.
Beth refused to look at him, but she could sense he was pointing at his
groin.
Her cheeks heated. Her heart began pounding with a mixture of anger and
impending danger.
She longed to give these drunken ruffians a piece of her mind, but that
would be foolish.
Right now, those men were simply shouting insults. But that could change
in an instant if she provoked them.
Instead, she forced herself to look resolutely straight ahead. She would not
give them the satisfaction of seeing her reaction.
“What’s the matter? You too uppity to give me the time o’ day?” the same
voice demanded.
Alarm shot through her. Her fingers tightened around Charlie’s reins. She
nudged her weary mount into a trot, heading for the white church steeple up
ahead.
“But why in hell did the reverend hire hisself a Negro woman? She even a
real doctor? I ain’t never heard of no colored docs, and especially no
colored woman docs!” a third voice opined, his voice quickly fading as she
left the crude group in her wake.
Beth let out a sigh of relief as she continued riding down what passed for
the main street here.
Twin Forks comprised a row of single-story buildings, most of them oneroom shacks constructed from roughly hewn boards and roofed with
wooden shingles, lining both sides of a wide dirt road at unevenly spaced
intervals. Some buildings were painted, but the majority were simply
constructed with weathered, rough-hewn planks.
