This was not the way it was meant to begin.
They should have been here together, cleaning the place and deciding
where to put everything, full of the excitement of starting a new chapter.
As it was, Meg stood alone and, she had to admit, rather forlorn on the
main street of the little village she had chosen as her new home, water
dripping from the sponge in her hand as she took a moment to catch her
breath and take in her new surroundings.

Washing windows this filthy was
hard work. Not for the first time since she had arrived four days ago, Meg
questioned her life choices. What had once been a shared dream had, when
it actually became within reach, swiftly become a sole desire and yet Meg
had stubbornly held onto it, ploughing ahead with their plans in the hope
that he would change his mind. She had arranged the finances herself,
offering the bank her inheritance and savings as downpayment to get a
mortgage on the old place, convincing herself he could pay her half back
when he came around to the idea.

The idea they had talked about for the past six years.
The idea she had made several trips to Lower and Upper Oakley to
dream about and flesh out in the hope of catching a property before it was
put up for sale to the public.

The idea that he then refused to even discuss.
The further Meg went with the project the further apart they grew, until
the point of no return – moving day. Her notice period worked, her boxes
packed, the frames and canvases out of storage and snuggly cocooned in
bubble wrap, the van scheduled to arrive at any minute, and yet not a single
item of his had been moved from its usual place in their shared flat. Then
and only then did it really sink in.

She was doing this alone.
Again not for the first time since arriving, Meg wiped a stray tear from
her cheek and straightened her protesting back, taking in her surroundings.
