DAMON
Just bourbon bourbon for me.” I waved to the bartender, Gracie. “Hurry up,
doll. I don’t have all day.”
I preferred to avoid all the extra sweeteners and artificial shit you’d find
in most cocktails.
She sauntered down the length of the bar with a wide grin, two drinks in
hand. “Well, Damon, aren’t you in a mood today? Did you lose a deal?” She
was in her thirties, but her voice was deeper than one would expect. A
result of a lifetime career of bar work, I suspected.
“Who’s in a mood?” I raised a questioning brow. “Nobody’s losing
deals over here.”
“Life is about the good things. Didn’t anybody ever teach you that?” she
asked with a wink. “Also, honey, I’ve only got two hands.”
“Better cheer up,” I heard the bouncer say behind me.
“Hey,” I said, “there’s nothing but positivity over here.”
“Uh-huh, sweets. I can see all that positivity just dripping from you.”
Gracie was on one today, with her sarcastic humor. She handed my buddies
the drinks they’d ordered, a Long Island Iced Tea for Oliver, and a classic
Martini for his brother Miles. “Careful, you guys, the alcohol content is
enough to knock you both on your asses,” Gracie joked.
The two cheered and raised their glasses. “Keep ‘em coming!”
She pivoted on her heel and glanced over her shoulder. “Get ya that
drink in a sec.”
“Appreciate it, Gracie,” I said, giving her a nod.
A long ride on my motorcycle through the countryside with my best two
buddies, followed by a few drinks at one of our favorite bars back in the
city—Talia’s was an old school biker bar, not a Highlands yuppie watering
hole. No attitudes, except maybe for the bouncer. It was unchanged since it
had reopened in the early 80s, with several pool tables in the back and the
next room. Seating was somewhat limited, but that was part of the charm. It
was the perfect place to celebrate the big deal we just closed at work. The
best part about it? I was the key player. And soon, a lot of people would see
a lot of profit.
It felt good.
Needless to say, my mood was good as well.
Oliver and Miles motioned to find a table, drinks in hands. I nodded as I
waited for my drink. But by the time the bourbon arrived, and I turned
around, they were out of sight.
Where the hell did they go? I scanned the crowded room and couldn’t
see them. Maybe they moved into the next room, I thought, setting out to
find them.
The moment I rounded the corner—I felt a jolt of human flesh slam into
my chest. Soft human flesh.
What the f—? My drink didn’t survive the collision.
I glanced down at my jeans and shirt, noting the damage of the spill,
before my gaze drifted up.
That’s when I saw her.
