Day turns to night, and the watcher in the wings has immersed himself
with my people. He sits next to Titus at the bonfire. The others hedge
around him, curious. Xavier’s easy smile puts them at ease.
I sit on the outskirts, alone.
When Titus pulls Xavier away, I follow, leaving behind the glow of the
fire, the smell of booze, and the judgmental stares of the other performers.
Goosebumps prick my skin as they disappear between trees.
I sneak after them with shoulders hunched like I have no business being
here, but I do.
It’s Xavier who doesn’t belong.
As I get close enough to hear their muffled voices, I Turn invisible and
squat behind a bush—leaving my clothes well-hidden and my head free to
pop up so I can see everything. Xavier leans against a tree, his head cocked
down as he listens to Titus speak. He’s already picked up on the fact that
keeping Titus happy is key to getting whatever he wants. If he throws in a
compliment or offers to make him money, they’ll be fast friends.
That’s the last thing I want.
“Two of you… Imagine the potential.” Titus revels at the thought.
Even I can admit that the two of us would make for a good show.
Two of us.
Xavier has my power.
I’m not the only one. It’s a fact that takes adjusting to. The wonder of his
power wars with the fact that he conned his way into a job. I still don’t
know what he expects to accomplish here.
“As I said before, I’m not interested in performing.” Xavier’s voice is
deep and too smooth.
He came all this way and doesn’t want any of the glory for his abilities?
Why?Hopefully, I won’t have to find out. There’s no way Titus will let Xavier
stay here, on his dime, if he’s not going to enter the spotlight with me.
Titus nods thoughtfully at Xavier’s words and doesn’t push the matter,
giving him a show of respect he’s never given me. “If you change your
mind…” Titus splays the fingers on his hand, waving in the general
direction of the rest of our camp. “We’d be honored to have you amongst
us.”
I laugh at Titus’s incorrect assessment. Even though I bring in a lot of
money with my invisibility routine, most of the others still can’t stand me.
They won’t be happy to have Xavier lurking, not once they find out who he
is.
“I will,” Xavier says, crossing his arms.
Chills run up my arms. Even though Xavier’s given no sign that he
knows I’m here, I can’t shake the feeling that he knows everything—or at
least way more than he should—about me
