I am king!” Rupert shouted, his face turning red.
His younger sister, Rosalia, rolled her eyes. “Ishjarta Ornstal is
the king of Fyrgia. He’s not going to give you the throne.”
“I’ll kill him and take it back,” Rupert insisted, pounding one plump fist
into the other palm.
Rosalia shook her head. “You can’t beat the fae, Rupert. We’re lucky
the Erlking didn’t kill us outright and that we live in comfort.”
Rupert snorted. “Mama says—”=
“Mama won’t recognize that we’re no longer the ruling family of
Fyrgia,” Rosalia pointed out. “The djinni would have slaughtered us
outright. The army of Golthar would have killed you and Anton, raped and
killed Mama, and probably condemned Liula and me to fates worse than
death.” She shook her head. “No, Rup—”
“I … am … king!” her older brother screamed, his face turning red with
the force of his emotion and spittle flying from his mouth. “I am king, and I
will kill the fae usurper!”
The pink ribbons on her braids fluttered as Rosalia shook her head and
walked away, leaving her disgruntled older brother to his tantrum, an event
that occurred more often the older he got. The firstborn of Fyrgia’s last
ruling human family remembered better than any of his younger siblings the
day the Wild Hunt had swarmed into their homeland’s capitol city and
overwhelmed its defenses. Rosalia vaguely remembered the bargain their
mother had made, agreeing to cede all claims to the throne to save her life
and protect her children. She did not blame her mother for capitulating to
the Erlking. The powerful fae king himself visited them every year, usually
in company with Oriel, his much less intimidating queen and consort.
Rosalia rather liked Oriel and wished the kindly fae queen had a coterie
of ladies-in-waiting like her mama used to have. She would have liked to be
part of Queen Oriel’s entourage. Sometimes she wondered what had
happened to her mother’s ladies-in-waiting, but never had the effrontery to
ask.
Entering the kitchen through the door to the garden, Rosalia nodded and
grinned at the cook, a lesser fae who nodded and smiled when the former
queen of Fyrgia tried to tell her what to cook, then cooked what she pleased,
anyway. Sikuanti gave her an indulgent smile and sawed off a thick slice of
still-warm bread.
“Sit, princess, and eat,” Sikuanti directed and poured her a glass of
milk.
Rosalie sat, picking up a spoon to dig into a jar of rare cloudberry jam
from far-away Daimonagi. She spread it on her bread. “Thank you.”
“You are welcome, princess.”
She shook her head, the conversation with her brother still fresh in her
mind. “Sikuanti, I’m not a princess, not any longer. I certainly don’t feel
like one.”
