FIVE MORE STEPS. THAT WAS ALL IT WOULD TAKE.
Deep breath in.
Now move.
My fingernails dug into the palms of my hands, the pain reminding me I
was still alive. And I would do everything to stay that way.
Finally, my legs moved another step, getting me closer to the exit.
I glanced over my shoulder and my breathing turned choppy. My vision
wavered, and I pinched my side to keep myself from passing out.

Another step. There were only three left. I could do this. There was no
other option. Because if I didn’t get out right now, I would never smell my
nan’s apple pie or hear my gramps’s hearty laugh again.
My body shook so hard, my teeth clacked together painfully. I forced
my legs to move another step forward. I reached for the door handle, finally
closed the remaining distance.

The cold air smacked me in the face, enough to clear the fog from my
mind. I stumbled away from the library, my lungs working overtime.
I’d always considered myself reasonably fit. I practiced yoga. I ate
healthy. I walked to work every day.

But nothing could have prepared me for running for my life.
Shops lined the street on both sides, but they were all closed since it was
past nine at night. There was nowhere to hide.
Shouts sounded behind me, and I knew they’d spotted me. I veered onto
a side street, knowing it would lead me closer to home. But should I even be
going home? What if I lead them straight to my house?
I somehow still had my bag, clutched tight to my side. It was heavy
regardless, but now there were also three books in there that I’d checked out
today after finishing my shift at the library.

And somewhere, buried in the depths, was also my phone. I only needed
a chance to get to it. Which meant stopping. My bag was big and bulky, and
there was no way I could find anything while running.
Spotting big dumpsters up ahead, I whipped my head around to see if
anyone had followed me down the alley. When I didn’t hear or see
anything, I dove behind a dumpster, crouching down. My hands shook so
much, I could barely grip anything.

When my fingers closed around the phone, it took me a few tries before
I could get it out of the bag. Wildly swipingat the screen, I called the only
person who I knew could help me.

“Hey, pumpkin. What are you doing calling me so late on a Friday
night? Shouldn’t you be out partying?”
I flew out from behind the dumpster and hurried back down the alley,
shaking so hard that the phone kept slipping from my ear. “Uncle Lex.”
“What happened?” he growled, his voice having lost its playful tone.

Glancing behind me, I stumbled around the corner. I was panting, barely
able to push out words. “I need your help.”
“Where are you?”
“On Baker Street.” A small sob escaped. “I don’t know where to go
next. They’re coming after me.”
